British Petroleum (BP): Functions of Management
British Petroleum (BP) is a service station offering different types of products to a diversity of customers. As an employee or cashier working for British Petroleum (BP), a person can see how sales reports and the ordering of products are part of the five functions for effective management. Taking a closer look into the five functions, such as planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling for effective management we can see how they are incorporated by the BP, where I work.

This brings us to the organizing function which is the next function of the five. Reilly, Minnick, and Baack states “Organizing may be defined as the process of efficiently and effectively bringing people and resources together to create products and services (Reilly, Minnick, & Baack, sect 3.1). Job design, departmentalization, and completion of the organizational structure are the three primary activities that organizing consists of.
As managers decides on the criteria to determine the tasks needed to be done, who will do them, and what selection criteria will be used to choose employees and place them on the job. Then managers are applying job analysis, job description, and job specification which are the three steps in the standard approach to job design. As retail clerks we fall in the category of front-line white collars. We have certain task to perform on a daily basis besides providing friendly customer service to our clientele. This can consist of washing pumps down, retailing, stocking coolers, and putting deliveries away. This is where the job description comes into play.
The job specifications come in to play as we are to be reliable and dependable to report to work on our scheduled shift. Retail clerks are cashiers that us a register to handle different types of transactions which could make basic math skills and cash handling one of the job
The job of a cashier involves operating the cash register, coordinating item returns, and answering telephone calls. Handling the cash register requires awareness of current discounts, since the prices and discounts of all items at Hobby Lobby are entered manually. Customer service makes up a large component of this occupation when helping customers locate desired merchandise or staff personnel and ensuring that the customers receive a friendly and efficient checkout. Other tasks included in this job such as organizing and restocking store shelves, returning merchandise to the appropriate location, and pricing items requires great attention to detail and a good memory.
According to Chester Barnard, “Organizing is a function by which the concern is able to define the role positions, the jobs related and the co- ordination between authority and responsibility. Hence, a manager always has to organize in order to get results. A manager performs organizing function with the help of following steps:-
Tasks and responsibilities: Manage associates, make sure customers are taken care of, manage sales and inventory, and make sure to keep a clean food safety department.
This position is similar to a receptionist, however there are added responsibilities such as preparing financial documents, gathering information from inside and outside of the workplace, having knowledge of products and service, and keeping records current. The median annual pay is about $$33,000. The difference in pay between a receptionist and information clerk can easily be accounted for in the deeper knowledge and responsibility. An information clerk has the ability to advance to positions with more responsibility, especially with the completion of a bachelor’s degree. The expected growth of this position is below average, at 2%, due to the advances in online ordering and automated programs.
-Assisting customers with posting payments and updating polices as needed, quoting and writing car insurance policies, working with customers on late payment notifications, nightly bank deposits, typing, filing, and scanning/uploading customer information into computer system as needed.
Organizing: this is the management function of gathering and coordinating the different systems and departments to function properly and benefit the financial situation of the organization.
During a flight cabin crew staff will also have the responsibilities and duties of serving food and beverages to passengers, where as being a receptionist their role will not involve this responsibility as the hotel have separate section for this such as their restaurant where the guests can purchase their food or if wish to do so they can call for room service as well. However, the different in this will be that receptionist’s do not have a three stage routine as they shift will always be based at front of house and they will be carrying out the same work pattern at all times.
3. Job analysis is the next step to consider the skills necessary for employees by job functions. To achieve the job analysis process one must consider the skills necessary for employees’ separated by job title or function. Employees can understand what the vital aspects of their jobs are by analyzing the entire job function and process. This process should include an explanation of primary job functions, how to produce them, and who is responsible for all parts, and the qualifications needed for all steps. Defining the key duties of each job function will benchmark all key elements to determine a systematic process.
