Monta’nasia Greene Paper 1
After reading, Breaking Night by Liz Murray, it left me in all, in a swing of emotions but thrilled in the end. To listen to Liz struggle and pain that she endured as a child and being homeless during her teenage years made me look a life in a whole different way and made me appreciate my life so much more. I could never imagine going through the obstacles Liz was thrown with, such as, drug addictive parents with AIDS, the pressure of taking care of everyone but herself, juggling school and more. It made me realize that my life isn’t so bad, that there are people going through worse situations than I am and to appreciate the little things that I do have.
I can’t believe that Liz and Lisa sat and

She didn’t like school at all, she couldn’t seem to make friends, teachers always looked at her as the “problem child” or truancy, and she didn’t have the necessities to feel comfortable in school. With everything going on at home school probably was another thing Liz seen as a problem instead of an outlet. Liz could’ve benefitted from attention at school if she actually cared about it, applied herself and tried her hardest to ignore what people would say or think about what they would say. Liz could’ve used school as another way out. I would’ve went to school to eat, to talk to someone about what was going on at home to see if them was anything somebody could’ve done to help my situation. The resources that she could’ve got could have been helpful. I feel like schools should pay closer attention monitoring the health of children because health is such an important factor in everyday life and not all children are given that luxury at home. Some students might feel that they are overweight and schools can help students understand what the real definition of overweight is, how can they stop becoming overweight and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes the stigma of being overweight can lead to eating disorders of students so it’s good to promote positive eating
Schools are a very important factor in determining obesity. Schools that resist a role in their students’ health welfare are setting their students’ up for obesity or at least poor health. In fact, “children consume 30 to 50 percent of their calories in school” (Klobuchar, 2011). Schools can be a positive influence and provide
Childhood obesity is a major public health epidemic which has significantly risen over the past three decades and there is no chance in sight of slowing it down unless real action is taken. This major health crisis continues to reduce individuals’ quality of life and has caused severe health problem like heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States and around the world. In most cases, obese children grow up to be an obese adult. The prevalence of childhood obesity can be addressed through education initiatives such as school prevention programs because children spent a majority of their time outside of the home at school, therefore school provides a great opportunity to educate and improve a child’s health at an ideal point before the problem gets worst. My paper will focus on childhood obesity prevention in Hill Top Middle school Lodi, New Jersey.
As a future educator of physical education, I feel that our nation’s weight problem is an issue that needs to be addressed. I feel that it is and will be my job to educate students about the importance of taking care of your body because “fat kids have a 92% chance of becoming fat adults” (www.amp.com). The leading cause of death in the United States, for men and women, is heart disease. “The United States alone the estimated annual number of deaths attributable to obesity is about 280,000.”
“Schools have been recognised as an appropriate setting for the prevention of eating disorders and child obesity due to the continual and concentrated access to a large number of individuals at a developmentally appropriate age” (Yager & O’Dea, 2005). If teachers and health professionals believe that changes need to be made to
On an institutional level, having schools provide healthy lunch options and remove high fat and high sugar foods from vending machines would be helpful. It would give the children at least one area where, if they are buying lunch from the school, their food will always be nutrient dense. Instituting mandatory nutrition courses at schools would educate the children on what they should be eating and explain why, making it more likely that they would change their eating habits since they will be able to understand why healthy eating is important. Performing a survey on the children of what their favorite sports or outdoor activities are would be a
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare ‘good health is an important element in a child’s quality of life as it can influence participation in many aspects of the life, including school and physical education’. A poor start to a child’s life increases the outcome of a poor adult life, as 24.9% of children aged from 5-17years already overweight or obese. These statistics are based on The International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), who have developed a standard age and sex-specific Body Mass Index (BMI) cut off point. Nutrition is the key factor of a student’s health and wellbeing, already students are; eating 48% junk food per day and eating majority foods that fall under the ‘red food’ category. (Health
The issue of obesity has been ongoing in the American society for over a decade and there is much that can be done to fix it. As the great businessman Richard Attias said, “Obesity is a problem that nearly every nation in the world is facing, but there is much that we can do to fix it” (Attais). With very little progress being made to stop or slow it down in the present time, the focus should be shifted towards the future. America’s younger generation should be taught about health, nutrition and preventing major weight gain. Adding lessons and classes to the American public school system that pertain to these subjects would greatly benefit our society in the future. Educating students about nutrition and physical activities will make them more aware about their health and staying healthy. This will cause students to be more proactive by eating healthier and exercising frequently. As a result, there will be a decrease in obesity in our society as the younger generation grows up.
Thank you for your time today. I am writing to you in hope that you will understand the issue and be motivated to make changes due to it. In the united states at least 678,000 deaths each year die due to poor diet, lack of nutrition, obesity and obesity rates have tripled in children. Children all learn what they know, and that includes knowledge on a proper diet, in school, so why are schools not helping enough in this matter? Why are schools hiding healthy eating habits behind bought pizzas and chips and other junk foods in the cafeteria? We, in the united states, are required to educate children in health at schools, through P.E. and health classes, and should not undermine their work by giving out the opposite of what we suggest. Many may say that this takes away freedom or is not that big of a problem, but do children really want to be obese or unhealthy? Do students want to die young from linked diseases such as Diabetes type 2 and cardiovascular diseases? No. They would still have food choices, but they would be able to have better options to choose, ones where facts and statistics do not cause fear in parents, but happiness.
Research has found that when kids get enough exercise, their learning skills, attitude and behavior at school improve. The same is true when they have access to healthy food choices. By helping kids be more physically active and eat well, we help them succeed academically, better preparing them for lifelong success.
The schools play an important part in the health of a child, there in schools they learn how to be active, eat healthy, and some schools districts provide a great program fun and fitness, but unfortunately, not all kids that need it participate in those programs, due to the lack of information to the parents.
The rate of childhood obesity has grown an enormous amount over the years with more than 40 million children being overweight! That number is astonishingly high and it is very obvious that something needs to be done about this. Studies had shown in 2008 that more than 40 million children were said to be overweight and the sad truth is that they are still increasing rapidly to this day; also every 1 in 4 teenagers is said to not reach the fitness guidelines (Tanner) according to an article by Lindsey Tanner. For this problem to be resolved not only do the parents of children need to make sure their kids are staying active but also, the schools they attend need to make sure they are getting a well-balanced meal and have some type of physical activity during their school day. Each state in America is given a percentage rate on the number of obese people in that particular state. The highest ranking state is Mississippi with a percentage of 34.9 and the state ranking the least is Connecticut with 24.5 percent. Different researches have shown that each day 850 lives are taken due to obesity and each year there are more than 300,000 people that die from obesity related illnesses. These are deaths that most likely could have been avoided if these individuals would have had the proper exercise and diet in their lives.
Studies have shown that from 1960-2010, the quantity of Obesity in America doubled. Obesity is one of the many health issues that America pays little attention to but should be evaluated and thoroughly dealt with. Heart Disease, Diabetes, Obesity, and Depression are some of the other main health problems that have been on the rise on Americans. While there are many health issues that people are more knowledgeable about, they usually learn when they or someone in their family has the experience of that health problem. A way to help prevent and have others become even more knowledgeable is by creating a program in which high school students learn about the types of health issues.
The magazine Women In Crime clearly fits into the crime fiction genre of the 1950s. It does this through women being represented as sexually attractive and in power over men, because at the time women being strong and deceitful was popular among Crime fiction writers. It shows the sexual attraction through the low cut dress, showing lots of skin, the stocking and the dark hair. All of these aspects of a woman at that particular time were seen as very attractive and desirable. The cover shows the lady in power through a male hand showing her jewelry but she looks unimpressed as if manipulating the man and acting angry to get what she wants. Women In Crime demonstrates the representation of women in crime fiction stories during the 1950s.
an environment for a child to not end up being victim to that statistics. School is like a second home, to many students spending up to 8 hrs or more in a school building. They should have the opportunity to incorporate physical activity into their day. Already there large umbers of obese children in the nation. “Percent of adolescents age 12-19 years who are obese: 18%”(CDC). There is about double the amount of adult s that is obese to children. Yet with physical education, the number of adults in future statistics that are overweight could vastly increases. The future generations could learn to improve there eating habits which can not only improve their own bodies but the overall
In the united state 1 of 3 kids is overweight, establishing a common topic in our community. Fatness is a global topic that exist in every part of the world. Some people are very strict when it comes to fatness. People think that a person who is overweight should be ashamed and take action over it. People from around the world judge others based on their appearance, by thinking there should be a control on their weight. Throughout the century things has been changing and in this case appearance is something people are being judge by. Many youngs as adult people are facing this circumstance, some of them even putting in risks their life, but a new update has been made that even children should be taken early decision and be ashamed of how they look, kids are having many difficulties in school by facing all types of bullying. overweight is a dangerous situation that they are letting them carries at their young age. Most of the kids stop in the path just because they do not feel comfortable going to school for example, just 65% of the students who graduated enrolled in college this October, as a result, students are not feeling comfortable in school since they are basically judged based on their appearance and not on their knowledge.
