When it comes to teaching English Language Learners, math is often an under researched topic because it is thought to be a language of numbers (Janzen, 2008). A misconception that many educators share is that because math uses symbols it is not associated with language or culture (Bresser, Melanese &Sphar, 2009). Not all English Language Learners are the same, and often times ELLs enter a new classroom that requires proficiency on both mathematical and linguistic levels. ELLs come in with different levels of schooling, some come from a situation where they have been attending school regularly, so the transition is not as hard as it is for the students who really have not attended school on a regular
Language is one of the most important tools people use in the United States of America, where language is the key that opens the door to all opportunities in this country –that can either unite or break our nation apart. The first time Congress proposed to designate English as the official language of the United States was in 1981, where Senator S.I Hayakawa, from California believed that English unified the American people. Hayakawa believed that bilingual education in the public school system was a threat to the nation itself, where language acted as a barrier that divide us a result of the friction between the public and minority language. Many states soon after, began to institute English-only law that restricted the use if other languages
English is the biggest language in the world, many countries use it as the official language. The most important two countries are United Kingdom and the United States. Long times ago, Britain is the first country that occupied North America. And they brought their language to here and teach the local people to say it. But after the United States been independent, Americans developed the British English to American English. We have a huge amount of languages around the world, such as Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese. These three languages are also having lots of speakers. How can English become the biggest language in the world? In the South part of the North America, Mexicans speak Spanish, and the original Americans speak Indigenous languages, but now English is the only language that is using in the US government. Why Americans didn’t choose other languages to be their official language after the United States was established?

As a way to learn and validate the research process, the students of English 1120 each conducted a survey with the other students in the class. Surveys were composed of two-three focused subject questions. Question were intended to have enough depth so that the students could form several assumptions based on the way their peers answered. In the class survey I composed, students answered questions based on their relationship with cultures different from their own. The first question asks students if they had ever traveled, and how far their adventure took them if they had. Ten students have traveled outside of the United States borders, and five students have gone across the pond to other countries. When asked, “Do you desire to know about cultures that differ from yours?” Twelve students replied that they do desire to learn more, and seven students replied that they would like to learn cultures in some respects. The final question asks, ““Do you think learning about different cultures is beneficial to you as a student?” Eighteen out of the nineteen respondents marked that they believe cultural learning is beneficial to them in their academic life.
Language is not consistent, it is changing by its nature, either because of innovation, technology, war or someone’s mistakes. English has developed over more than 1500 years since Anglo-Saxon invasion in AD 450 as they brought a set of Anglo-Frisian (Anglo-German) dialect, which became known as Old English. This time was the beginning of the development of English language.
Language is one of the most powerful mediums in the human world, and not only can language be expressed through words, but also visually and musically. Language is everything from words that are spoken and the silence that lies between one phrase and the next. I find out odd how in our culture, we try to label things black and white. It’s either this or it’s that, yet when there’s something lacking in language, we try to assign colors to it instead of letting things be how they are. I have two types of mediums that I feel shows the idea that things are visually and audibly black and white, but it’s difficult to leave it at that.
Through “technological developments” such as printing, the political imposition of rulers…,and lexicographical efforts of scholars” (Canagarajah 73) the standardization of the English language began in the seventeenth century. With the help of text like the “English Keyword” and “The Place of World Englishes in Composition: Pluralization Continued” by author A. Suresh Canagarajah as well as "Nah, We Straight": An Argument Against Code Switching by author Vershawn Ashanti Young and Paul Matsuda’s text “Threshold Concept 4.6” it is the goal of this essay to show through these texts the implication of this standardization of language and the effects that it has on non-traditional users. In the English language, there are several words that are considered off-limits in everyday use for Americans. This is as a result of the negative significance the words held historically. However, the words are still used in specific contexts. For example, these words have been used for educational purposes or in comedy skits. This leads one to wonder how these boundaries have been set within language and why can they be used in specific contexts. It is evident that the development of cultural identity is influenced by the heavily honored restrictions placed on these words. It has shaped people’s behavior within different media platforms. In order to identify the effect of language and these external sources in society, the bias, story framing and effect of perceived notions are analyzed within three different types of texts.
