There was a clear discomfort with the members of the group. Even in a non-group setting this is a feeling many people can relate to, one just needs to think of when a friend suffers a loss in their life, it is not uncommon to hear or say, I am sorry, I don’t know what to say. Though clearly different, there are similarities to personal relationships and a group, the closer you are to a person that suffered a loss, the more comfortable one would be with the depths of the emotions and the ability to support your loved one. The male facilitator asked if the topic could be revisited at the next meeting. The female facilitator asked F4 for if she was safe to go out of group and if she wanted to talk about it the following day. She stated that even saying it out loud made her feel better and she didn’t know what to do with it. Though F4 didn’t, that we know of, use self-harm as a coping mechanism, it would be important to address the topic in the following group. “Self-harm is pervasive in society, a behavior which has evolved with us throughout history, cutting across social and cultural divides, affecting people in clinical and community populations (Long, 2013, p. 111).” The group needs mutual aid and cohesion, it would not be positive for the group as a whole or for F4 to not address the self-harm in the next meeting. Being that the members of this group are social work students, I believe that the concern would not just dissipate and there would be tension if the self-harm was not addressed. It would also not acceptable to allow a stigma to negatively impact F4. F4 could withdrawal, become a silent member, or unintentionally become the scapegoat or she may drop out of the group
