Bullying: Cause and Effect Bullying is one of America’s largest current problems involving children and teens, it is serious, destructive, and harmful and desperately needs to stop. Bullying is not secluded to one area of America, it is alive in many homes and schools. Bullies play an enormous role in causing their peers to injure themselves, become mentally unstable, struggle with depression, and potentially commit suicide. Many encounters with bullies are kept silent, which can be extremely dangerous to the victim. There are many different circumstances that play a role in causing a kid to bully another kid. There are also many solutions that desperately need to be placed in action to help fix the awful situation of bullying. It is dangerous and has the ability to devour many harmless lives.
The act of bullying by definition is, “to frighten, hurt, or threaten (a smaller or weaker person)” and “to cause (someone) to do something by making threats or insults or by using force” (“Bully”). The definitions release the knowledge of how dangerous bullying is and what kind of harm it can do to a person. A person is only technically bullied if he or she feels threatened repeatedly. The victim may find it hard to protect himself against the bully. Bullying, often labeled as just a part of growing up, is a major problem in America’s schools today. Although it is such a hot topic in our country right now, it is also a long ignored problem that only seems to worsen. The complication with bullying is that no one quite understands it, and it is not taken seriously. The definition of bullying is an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. In more simple terms, bullying is not a onetime incident; it is repetitive and happens among individuals when there is an imbalance of power. Statistically, every one in six children are bullied, and this cannot continue to take place. Every child has the right to feel safe and have the pursuit of being happy in which bullying completely takes those rights away.
The actual definition of bullying is “using superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” But, my take on bullying is when someone with higher power places an undeserving individual under a microscope, while shredding them apart to make them feel as miniscule and meaningless as desirable. I consider this because anyone who has ever been bullied before knows that you feel like you cannot do anything about it and that they have a higher power over you. You

Bullying has quickly become a serious problem in schools, and it negatively impacts both the bully and the victim. Students who have been bullied even once in their lifetime have a higher risk of attempting suicide, and in general have lower self-esteem, causing them to have difficulty maintaining relationships. Bullies themselves also begin to harass their peers because they have been abused or uncared for by their own family. While it may seem bullying is just a normal part of the high school experience, victims of bullying can face many psychological problems. Bullying is not something that should be disregarded, but instead should be properly addressed so that children who are bullied can find the help they desperately need.
According to the American Psychological Association, “Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions” (Bullying, 2013). People bully each other for several reasons and there are different outcomes that are a result of those reasons. People can be bullied physically, emotionally, or verbally. Bullying can take place at school or online. Bullying should be a considered a crime, but kids get away with it all the time; furthermore prevention can be used in order to keep kids safe from bullying.
Issue: If you or your child have ever been a victim of bullying then you know how horrible one can feel. There are many emotions and fears associated with bullying, and no one should have to be subjected to it. Bullying can have a lasting effect not only in one’s present life but their future as well. Bullying is very prominent in schools today, and there has been an increase in school shootings, which is the extreme reaction to being bullied. Children need to consider each other’s feelings before they decide to bully or pick on each other.
Bullying is unwanted behavior that causes a child to feel isolated and alone. In order for an act to be considered bullying the act has to be, or be able to be repeated multiple times. Bullying can be done verbally by teasing, name-calling, taunting or inappropriate sexual comments directed at someone to purposefully upset them. Bullying can be done socially by isolating students on purpose, telling other students not to play with them, spreading rumors about students or attempting to embarrass them in public. Bullying can also be done physically by hitting, kicking, spitting, tripping, breaking property or making rude gestures. Most bullying is done during unstructured times such as recess, lunch, in the hallways, before school or after school. There is typically less adult supervision during those times. All of these things are meant to bring down the self-esteem of others. Bullying can have very serious effects on both students being bullied as well as the bully themselves.
Bullying has become more of an issue that is threatening our younger generation today. Bullying is becoming more of a vicious act in public schools throughout the United States (Coloroso, 2003; Felix & McMahon, 2006). There are many adverse effects that are caused by this disgraceful act. The average school-age child is silently or overtly tormented on a daily basis. Many of these students who experience bullying feel that they have no one to talk to, or that they have no where to go. School age children are learning skills and lessons from their teachers as well as through peer interactions. What brought the attention to people about bullying is the number of suicides that are committed by adolescents and the stories they share online or live television. Bullying is categorized to be direct verbal, direct physical, and indirect forms. Not every person has an idea how terrible bullying can be and how harmful it is to the victim. Bullying has driven students to commit actions they have never done before such as cutting themselves, suicidal thoughts, health disorders, and bad behavior. Bullying must be taken seriously, because it results in negative effects on its victims and may drive students to commit horrific actions. Lawmakers should draft anti-bullying legislation, students should stand up for one another, and society should work out what can be done to combat this problem.
Bullying has become a major issue throughout not only the Unite States but also the world. Many children are being bullied in school, at home, and even online. This has created a crisis that leaves kids damaged emotionally, some cases leading towards suicide. With this serious issue, it is critical to find bullying solutions everyone can use as a way to stop behavior and save children that are bullied everyday.
Bullying is an everyday occurrence that happens universally. According to StopBulllying.gov in order for a behaviour to be considered bullying the behaviour must be both aggressive and include an imbalance of power such as psychical strength, access to embarrassing information or popularity to control or harm others. It’s important to note that power imbalances can change over time and in different situations even if they involve the same people. Second, the behaviour must include repetition. Bullying behaviours happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once. Bullying can include a number of actions including, making threats, spreading rumours, attacking someone psychically or verbally and purposely excluding someone
The terms bully and the act of bullying are defined in many ways. From a blustering quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people to “instances when a child is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other students” to being later fully defined as including the intention to cause harm as well as a power differential in which the less powerful person is being attacked. The most recent definition of bullying is, “as an aggressive behavior or intentional harm doing that is carried out repeatedly and over time in an interpersonal relationship characterized by an actual or perceived imbalance of power or strength”. Since bullying has such a wide array of definitions it is often handled differently for each situation.
Bullying is not a new problem, it is the most frequent type of victimization encountered by youths, and is a growing public health dilemma (Bradshaw, 2013). Many studies conducted over the last few decades has affirmed that bullying occurs regularly in the United States of American (USA). Statistics have shown about 20% of youths in grades 9-12 in the USA have been subjected to bullying at school (Barrios, David-Ferdon, Hertz, Holt & Jones, 2015; Campain, Goldberg, Hase, Smffith & Stuck, 2015).
