This case has major implications in relation to higher education in California. The ACCJC was instilling sanctions on colleges and causing their accreditation to be in jeopardy unless they resolved them. If you lose your accreditation, state law prohibits them from receiving taxpayer funds (SF GATE, 2013). In the case of CCSF, the school’s closure would impact about 75,000 students and nearly 2,500 faculty and staff on 11 campuses throughout the city. The college contributes about $300 million to the local economy every year, according to a recent study by San Francisco’s Budget and Legislative Analyst. These boards, commonly referred to as a board of regents or a board of trustees …. ensure the financial integrity of the institution, and establish policies” (pg. 118). In the case of CCSF, their board and administration failed to govern the institution in a successful way. An independent study by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (2013) determined the following issues to be prevalent in the college, “lack of cooperation among cabinet-level leadership, deficit spending, the chancellor’s apparent lack of support for the business office, insufficient funds for maintenance, uneven reduction of staff throughout the business office, and extremely low morale” (Pg. 3). In addition, we recommend that the CCC continue to monitor the new accrediting agency and make sure that collegiality and support exists between the agency and community colleges. We believe that programs can be evaluated in a number of ways, definitely through statistical data as far as completion rates (graduation, degrees etc.). I would not use these statistical findings as a punitive measure but as an informative way to build upon, evaluate and improve.
