This case has major implications in relation to higher education in California. The ACCJC was instilling sanctions on colleges and causing their accreditation to be in jeopardy unless they resolved them. If you lose your accreditation, state law prohibits them from receiving taxpayer funds (SF GATE, 2013). In the case of CCSF, the school’s closure would impact about 75,000 students and nearly 2,500 faculty and staff on 11 campuses throughout the city. The college contributes about $300 million to the local economy every year, according to a recent study by San Francisco’s Budget and Legislative Analyst. CCSF would be the largest U.S. institution ever to lose its accreditation, the American Association of University Professors reported last …show more content…
These boards, commonly referred to as a board of regents or a board of trustees …. ensure the financial integrity of the institution, and establish policies” (pg. 118). In the case of CCSF, their board and administration failed to govern the institution in a successful way. An independent study by the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (2013) determined the following issues to be prevalent in the college, “lack of cooperation among cabinet-level leadership, deficit spending, the chancellor’s apparent lack of support for the business office, insufficient funds for maintenance, uneven reduction of staff throughout the business office, and extremely low morale” (Pg. 3). The cause of these issues was “due in part to a strong culture of a chancellor-centered decision-making process that excludes key cabinet level input with a significant influence of local politics” (Pg. …show more content…
In addition, we recommend that the CCC continue to monitor the new accrediting agency and make sure that collegiality and support exists between the agency and community colleges. We believe that programs can be evaluated in a number of ways, definitely through statistical data as far as completion rates (graduation, degrees etc.). I would not use these statistical findings as a punitive measure but as an informative way to build upon, evaluate and improve. Continuing the standard of excellence or what has been working if the data shows successful findings. You can also survey the students in the program as well as its faculty and staff. The ultimate goal being a positive outcome for the college and its
While they do have a tremendous focus on workforce development and training, the opportunity to take a more active role in higher education exists. By adjusting their focus to act as a bridge for students, the community college has the ability to soften the transition financially and educationally. Community colleges must move beyond their reliance on open acceptance policies and actively pursue students who would otherwise attend universities. By offering comparable course tracks that will challenge and educate they can move even further past the image of being a second class institution. More focus must be placed on both building articulation agreements with the universities and educating potential students about the benefits of making the community the next stop on their education
Some may feel that this is soley the students fault, while in actuality, budget cuts take a major toll as well. Marcus obtained information from Califorrnia State University that two-thirds of their students couldn't register for the clasess they needed, because of funding,
The office I currently work in is the financial aid office at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). CNM is a two-year institution. After reviewing the seven inventories, I have discovered that there is so much outside the financial aid office that takes place to insure student success. A common misconception is that all learning outcomes are the responsibility of faculty. All departments can use these principals across the institution. As stated by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators [NASPA], (n.d.), “They are intended to shape how we think about our responsibilities, communicate our purposes to others, and engage students” (para. 14).
The state of California has long been reliant on the University of California system to provide its resident companies with skilled and educated business, technology, and science leaders. Highly regarded as one of the top educational systems in the world, the University of California boasts a high number of distinguished and respected faculty members in almost every field of study. However, while most private colleges and universities have learned how to streamline their processes in order to better respond to stakeholder needs, public educational institutions, such as the University of California, have not been willing to control their bureaucratic growth resulting in a rise of tuition rates and a decline in the level of student satisfaction. In her article for the TIME magazine, Kate Pickert writes that as recently as November of this year the University of California has approved a plan that could raise tuition rates by up to 28% (Pickert). Pickert also points out that the tuition rates at the University of California have more than tripled since 2001. The University of California has blamed the increased tuition on the state of California budget cuts caused by the economic downturn of recent years. However, a closer examination of the University of California faculty and administration data makes it obvious that the higher rates of tuition are cause by the inability and
The faculty is entrenched in their ways, and change causes ambiguity and uncertainty. Moreover, the faculty in the organization feel uncertain about the new concepts presented by Dr. Ball to the deans altering their salaries and evaluations (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 31). The proposed changes create competition and unrest among the faculty and will shatter the business-as-usual campus conduct and job security. The dean's and faculty are grasping at the symbolic frame, defending their beloved academic lifestyle (Bolman & Deal, 2013, p. 248). The secondary problem in this case is support from the deans of the incentive program that will restore Weston University prestigious reputation as set by the board and developed by the president.
Grove College City issued a lawsuit against the ED saying that they could not stop the financial aid of the students based on the refusal to sign the Assurance of Compliance form. A federal trial court agreed, but they soon turned in favor to the ED, and Grove College City took the case to the Supreme Court. When Supreme Court reviewed the case they agreed that the ED had the right to act considering that the BEOGs were federal funds, and they also agreed that the TITLE IX
The California Postsecondary Education Commission was granted puissant duties and powers in 1974, after replacing the Coordinating Council for Higher Education (Education Commission of the States, 2016). The commission does not serve as a governing board but as an advisory committee to the House of Representatives, governor, and higher education institutions, with matters paramount to education policies (Education Commission of States, 2016). The commission holds the authority to review state public and private higher education institutions financial records, budgets, academic programs and provide recommendations for campus expansions. However, the primary function of the commission is to coordinate practices that prevent redundancy within the education divisions (Education Commission of States, 2016). The focus of the commission is driven by the state’s strategic work plan, for which goals are established targeting institutional areas of concern.
Reporting party (RP) called CCIB to cross report that resident Gerald Gilliland (DOB: 4/22/41) reported that while he resided at this facility, unknown male staff locked him in a room against his will. The former president at Blue State Community College was forced to resign less than a week after the start of the Fall session. This left the college in disarray. In an average situation, the Provost of the college was the next Administrator in line to fill the position in an
The students are still expected to pay back the thousands of dollars in loans regardless of the school being forced to close due the improper practices. They call themselves the “Corinthian 15”. They met with the Department of Education in February of 2015 but their plea fell on death ears.
This was constitutional under the California state law; therefore, the college should have been allowed to go along with their special program. The reason that the United States Supreme Court came to their conclusion is because of their decision on ethics. That is right; this is an ethical matter between what is right and what is wrong. The US Supreme Court at this time did not realize what the effect of their decision would be. It has hurt minorities, only giving them more and more reasons to be unsatisfied. Minorities already struggle. It is the right of schools and everybody else to maintain equality, but the Supreme Court voted against this. People on Bakke’s side are only looking at the educated white people, and not giving the chance to the minorities in the country. This leads to an even bigger separation between the two. Where has the acceptance of others
There isn't anything more important to community colleges than the certainty that they can and should provide all qualified people who are looking to be accepted with admittance (Vaughan). The people of the community college represent forty-four percent of all undergraduates and forty-nine percent of students attending college for the first time (David). These students include a lot of minority students, students with a low social standing and the non-standard (age twenty-five and older) student who commonly enters college less academically equipped (David). Most community colleges have made immense advancement in reducing a lot of geographical and economic blockades that have in the past limited college admittance (David). Community
Faculty and administration coming together on one accord in support of an agreed upon mission is key to success. The article speaks about how the university of UNC worked together to come up with a classroom space problem they were having trying to accommodate the growing student population. The faculty worked on a schedule and the administration was able to provide funding needed to pay for technology upgrades rather than spending it on a new building, which resulted in saving the university $800,000 (Denneen, 2012). In addition, keeping in mind that each faculty member and administrator must share accountability and understand his or her role in this process or it can ultimately fall
Under a new policy that started a year ago, USC admissions authorities have rejected some of the courses being taught at the chistian school, specifically darwin’s theory of evolution, the suit says. The lawsuit references five Calvary Chapel students, identified only by their initials, all with outstanding academic and extracurricular records, who it contends will not qualify for admission because of the university 's course requirements. The suit accuses the USC Board of Regents and five university officials for violating the plaintiffs ' rights to freedom of speech and religion, and of displaying hostility toward Christianity. It seeks an injunction against the university system 's practices(Van
