This course revolves around the local,national and global aspects that have shaped Canada's identity from as early as World War I to the present. The course is also taught in a Catholic School that encourages students to relate subjects to the Catholic religion. Students are to evaluate issues such as human rights, social and economic change and national and international relationships from a Catholic perspective. It aids students in achieving these goals by splitting the subject into five different strands.

The first strand is“Communities: Local, National and Global” and revolves around local, national and global influences that have shaped Canada's identity. This a constant thread that strings all the units in the text from 1914-1999. There is the analyzing of demographic patterns and their impact on Canadian society as well as the impact of scientific and technological on Canadians. This a common theme in the unit Birth of an Identity when discussing the growth of Canada as a country population wise. It is also evident in Birth of an identity when mentioning the industrialization of Canada in the early 1900's. However, to understand this unit in greater depth students will also focus on the strand “Citizenship and Heritage”.

The “Citizenship and Heritage” helps student understands the contributions of various social and political movements in Canada. Students will learn these concept in the units “Birth of an Identity”, “Redefining the Nation” and “Troubles in the Family”. These units discuss the social and political movements that have defined our country as a nation both nationally and internationally.
