Canada played a major role throughout the global conflict which took place from the late 1930’s to the mid 1940’s. Canadian involvement throughout the war proved critical to its outcome. The Second World War is a major turning point in our countries history and signified our sovereignty as an independent nation, the war “transformed a quiet country on the fringes of global affairs into a critical player in the 20th century’s most important struggle” 1. The Canadian forces throughout the battle faced great triumphs during campaigns in Normandy and Italy, while they also faced defeat like in Dieppe and Hong Kong. Canada played a huge roll throughout the Second World War which proved significant to its outcome.

Canadian forces were given the important and deadly task of liberating the Netherlands from the Nazis. Canadians managed to clear northern and western Netherlands of Germans, allowing food and other relief to reach millions of desperate people. The liberation of the Netherlands played a key role in the war, as the Allied forces closed in on Germany from all sides. Canadians played a major role in the liberation of the Dutch people who had suffered terrible hunger and hardship under the increasingly desperate German occupiers, strengthening ties between the two countries to date.
Canada’s military performance in various battles such as the Battle of Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge in World War I was epoch-making and it really illustrated our military strength. Canada was praised as a nation and our identity was impacted by World War I. The war efforts and Canada’s involvement with the war were exceptional. While there were many events in Canadian history that helped shape our nation, World War I remains the most significant
The final section I would like to discuss is Canada’s involvement not only made an immense difference in Sicily’s capture, but how their supporting role continued through the Italian peninsula. The Canadians were squashed in-between the Americans and British forces which gave them a small voice by the end of the war. Do to their lesser military and governmental power, Canada’s role in Sicily had been less viewed by the public. The Canadian army made a remarkable reputation for themselves through the entire Italian campaign and should have been honored in a higher regard.
The events of July and early August 1914 are known as the sparks that lit the explosion of World War I. Uneasy tensions that had been boiling beneath the surface of Europe for many years soon erupted and with that several alliances that were formed over the past decades were invoked, so within weeks the major powers were at war; via their colonies, the conflict advanced rapidly. When war officially broke out in 1914, Britain joined in the defense of Belgium and in reaction to Germany's violation of the treaty in which the countries neutrality was to be respected by all other nations. Upon this Britain requested that all dominions of the British Empire, including Canada were to fight on its behalf.
World war 2, and the events throughout it, left a positive impact on Canada. Political policies including the Hyde-Park agreement and training camp, Camp X greatly effected Canada as country. Following that there were also the successful military battles for canadians, including Juno Beach and the Italian Campaign. Other individuals outside of the war also had impacts on Canada with their involvement in the social policies during the war time for instance Social welfare Programs and women's participation in the armed forces. Each of these left their own positive mark on Canada bringing it to be what it is today.
Canada supported the United Nations, and joined many wars in which the United Nations supported. The cause of the First Gulf War goes all the way back to August 1990 when Iraq invaded the country of Kuwait declaring it a province of the nation of Iraq. Western countries immediately responded, all of which calling for Iraq to withdraw their troops from Kuwait. By November the UN had gotten so frustrated by the negotiations with Saddam Hussein, the President of Iraq, that it came to the conclusion that they should authorized the use of any and all forces necessary to remove Iraq from Kuwait. When Hussein failed to respond, war began. Since the United Nations were in support of this war Canada joined the group of countries fighting Iraq. In the late 1980’s ethnic divisions were starting to threaten tearing Yugoslavia apart. Every attempt to reorganize Yugoslavia into a federation of some sort proved to be pointless. On
The life at home during WWI was in a dire situation due to this being Canada’s first war. Canada used tactics such as censorship to hide what the war was really like, and kept on glorifying war. The economy was also in a dire situation with the massive amount of debt Canada kept on amassing. Canada used mass censorship from changing letters home, to controlling the media itself to not leak important war information. Canada was completely unaware of the situation in the war and was lead to believe going to war was some glorious feat and those who did not go where a disgrace to Canada.
When w.w.1 and w.w.2 first broke out the position and national interest of Canada it was the protection of freedom and democracy against German tyranny fascism. For Canada`s role is that it was support and supply, but evolved into a fighting force to be reckoned with. The overall major support as almost 10 % of Canada`s population went to fight in these wars and a large work force was employed to manufacture all manner of supplies to support the war effort. In the end of the wars Canada`s military took on a role as peacekeepers. In the treaty of Versailles Canada did participate, but was barley recognized for what it had done to be respected more in that they did all the dirty work and they did not. The treaties and organizations of post-w.w.2
In World War II we could notice how Canada began to shape itself as an independent country. Therefore, World War II had a positive impact on Canada due to the political policies, military policies and battles, and additionally social policies. The political policies were effected positively due to Clarence Decatur Howe war economy along with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Military policies and battles were issued positively because of the Canadians at D-day including the Italian Campaign. Lastly the social policies were impacted in a positive way as a result of the women in the armed forces, furthermore the women in the home front.
The first major event that impacted Canada’s legacy, as a whole, was the sacrificial battle of Vimy Ridge. Vimy Ridge was proven to be essential to the foundation of Canada as it signified the birth of a new nation and it was considered to be the greatest battle fought, in World War One. Firstly, the Battle of Vimy Ridge established Canada’s emergence as a newly born nation from under the shadow of Britain and gave a verification of Canada’s prominence on the international level. For instance, after successfully regaining the ridge, it displayed to the British superpower, that Canada are worthy of independence, that must be granted upon as a reward for a significant victory (Fonseca). As a result, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, marked the end of British soldiers commanding Canadian troops, as Canada showed tremendous resilience internationally, and also proved that we are independently, capable of leading a well-organized attack against other countries (Fonseca). This milestone was a huge accomplishment for Canadians, as eventually this was the catalyst for total autonomy of Britain (“History Now”). Secondly, the Battle of Vimy Ridge gave Canada justified independence on the international stage. As a result of winning the complicated battle, Canada was deservedly permitted to their own independent seat and signature at the peace talks after the war. This then allowed Canada, to participate in voicing their thoughts, and plans as a newly independent country. This was seen to be,
Canadians contributed in many ways to help our country's great efforts in the First World War. Canadians had literally the whole country and made enormous demands on the Canadian people, whether they were involved in the actual fighting or remained on the home front to work in industry or farming to support the war effort. Canada grew tremendously through the war as a nation, individually and emotional. Canadian troops had to be strong and responsible as they were always running from one front to another and had to be strong so that the little thing don’t bother them so they don’t become emotionally unstable, then could end there life. Strength played a major role through the war as did courage and every Canadian troop had those two
Years 1939 to 1945 marked the beginning and end of World War II. Not only was Europe left broken and destroyed, this was also a time of change for North America. Specifically for Canada, World War II was not just battles and deaths, it was also a time period for growth. During World War II, Canada emerged as a stronger nation by events that illustrate growth. This can be seen through the following three examples: the changing role of women, the Hyde Park Declaration and the Battle of Ortona.
The second world war had a significant impact on Canada. Fought from 1939 to 1945, the war consisted of many events which led to drastic changes for our country. Despite the destruction and disaster it caused, the war played a part on shaping Canada's relationship with America. Most importantly, their economy was benefited through Americanization. Canada's government was more involved which led to a political system called the welfare state. The war also impacted Canada's liberal view towards the acceptance of European immigration. World war two altered and benefited every aspect of Canada's structure; economically, socially, and politically.
WWII was a defining moment in Canadian history, transforming a quiet country on the verge of global affairs into a crucial opponent in the 20th century's most tragic battle. Canada played a vital role in the Battle of the Atlantic and the air war over Germany, and sacrificed thousands of lives. Between 1939 and 1945 more than one million Canadian men and women served full-time in the armed services and more than 43,000 were killed (Stacey, July 15, 2013 ). In November 1944, after extreme losses in front-line units serving in Northwest Europe and Italy, Ottawa legitimized conscription, sending out 16,000 home defence men overseas (Canadian War Museum, N/A). This implement for Conscription was necessary for Canada based on the lack of Canadian volunteers, the
From the fall of 1939 to the fall of 1945, it was evident that the recent World War had greatly affected various countries around the world, especially those who [struggled] through it on an almost national level. One of these countries includes Canada, who fought alongside the United Kingdom, United States, France and the Soviet Union in a military alliance known as The Allies against Nazi Germany and the Axis Powers. At the time, it was a comparatively new and independent country, with a smaller military force compared to others involved in the wars’ efforts. Their declaration of war was approximately one week after the powers of Britain and France; on September 10th, 1939. This was likely done to show that Canada can make its own decisions as a nation, and that it was not as committed to Britain’s declaration as much as in World War I, which started just twenty-five years prior. Despite the country’s military size, Canada still played a significant role in World War II. Due to the nation’s contributions of military, economic and social advances, the Allies were able to win the war, and Canada was able to improve on its own as a country.
