As an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, I sought to develop cancer epidemiology as my focus area. Cancer epidemiology involves efforts to monitor cancer occurrence in populations so as to understand the etiology of cancer in a better way and come up with strategies to help prevent and control the mortality and morbidity of cancer (Schottenfeld, 2006). The areas of research in this area of study include; cancer survivorship, use of geographical information systems in the control and prevention of cancer among others.
I chose to develop this area of expertise since cancer is among the most widely developed epidemic today given the number of people who are reported to have cancer. Besides that, it is also important since it can help create cancer awareness among those people who do

Besides that, it can determine the relative importance of illness causes as well as deaths and disabilities so as to establish research priorities. In addition to that, it can help in identifying the population sections that have the highest risks from specific ill health causes in order to direct the indicated action appropriately. Finally, it can be helpful in evaluating health program effectiveness in the improvement of the population’s health. I plan to advance my knowledge of epidemiologic principles in cancer by monitoring the reports of cancer in the communities, studying whether certain components of diets have influences on the risks of cancer development, evaluating the impact and effectiveness of a cholesterol program through a deign of quasi-experimental study. Besides that I plan to conduct an analysis of the historical as well as the current trends on project data for future needs of public health resources (Schottenfeld,
Cancer is a term used for diseases in which irregular cells divide without any control and have the capability to penetrate and infect normal body tissue through the blood and lymph system. Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in the United States, exceeded barely by heart disease. According to the CDC Cancer Statistics and Data, there were more than 1.45 million people diagnosed with various kind of cancer between 1999 and 2007 and out of those more than 562,000 people died due to cancer (cdc.gov, 2012). Currently there are more than 200 different types of cancer that have been discovered. Cancer could be
Throughout life, many individuals experience difficulties due to growing up in everyday life. While going in depth of the human life, it is discovered that there are many diseases and disorders that affect humans’ everyday functions. A very popular disease that has traumatically affected the human body is cancer. Cancer is a disease that spreads throughout your body in many ways. The purpose of cancer is to attach to a blood cell in your body and cause a plague within itself, causing the body to initially shut down and die. This disease contains many forms and have many causes to it. However its main goal is to destroy the human body.
Specific Purpose: My intention is to raise awareness of one cancer as well as understanding the purpose of the study.
Cancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children – and represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, particularly in developing countries.
With cancer requiring colossal amounts of money from society to attempt to treat and cure the disease, it has become an important and relevant social issue in the United States. In 2016 alone, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 cancer diagnoses along with approximately 595,690 deaths in correlation with cancer in the United States (Cancer). Although with the United States having a population around 318 million, only approximately 5% of the population will be affected by cancer. With this only affecting a small portion of the total population, the topic of cancer can create a social issue and source for debate
The Epidemiology Research Program strives at decreasing the stress of cancer by overseeing large, nationwide studies that they anticipate will increase the knowledge base of cancer related to the causation and survival as well as having an impact on cancer prevention programs (ACS, 2017a). They have a team of experts that manage everything pertaining to cancer prevention studies (ACS, 2017a). From these studies, they have published over 750 scientific articles, which have been utilized nationally as well as internationally (ACS, 2017a). They have made significant contributions to tobacco-related research, obesity, diet, activity levels, use of hormones, pollution, and other cancer related exposures (ACS, 2017a). For more than 60 years, information obtained involving the research of nearly 2.7 million men and women of the United States that were willing to be enrolled in the
The researched statistic would show how quantitative evidences support the ideas of unhealthy food and sporadic cancer. It would be helpful to provide information contrasting hereditary cancer and sporadic cancer, as well as narrowing down the topic to specific
In this project I am going to be researching the effectiveness of treating and preventing cancer by having preventative campaigns and by the development and research of new treatment methods.
Incidence data were obtained from population-based cancer registries, which may cover entire national populations but more often covered small
Globally, cancer is one of the leading causes of death (Fitzmaurice et al., 2015; WHO, 2012). It is continue to consider as a pandemic disease, take into account it's increasingly prevalence rate worldwide (Jacox, Daniel & Payne, 1994; American Cancer Society, 2015).
Cancer is growth of abnormal cells, it can affect any part of the body and if not treated it can spread and lead to death. Anyone can get it but risk of getting a cancer disease goes up with age. Most of cancers are diagnosed in people who are over 50. It is not just one disease, but a large group of almost hundred diseases. The most commonly diagnosed cancer is prostate cancer, followed by breast cancer, then colorectal cancer, melanoma and lung cancer. It is very common being the second leading cause of death globally. Over one and a half million new cancer cases are diagnosed each year, therefore it is very common. The risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person’s lifestyle, for instance, by staying away from tobacco, alcohol, eating plenty of
Oncology is the study of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tumors and cancers. The oncology departments at Carolinas HealthCare System offers outpatient and inpatient facilities and provide treatment to patients with different types of cancers in rural and metropolitan areas of North and South Carolina. Cancer is an equal opportunity illness that can affect young people, older people, and everyone in between. Per the CDC, Cancer death rates are going down, but rates don’t tell the whole story. Cancer will soon be the leading cause of death in the United States. By 2020, the number of new cancer cases is expected to increase to nearly 2 million a year. ("CDC," )
According to the World Health Organization, more than 11 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. It is estimated that there will be 16 million new cases every year by 2020. In the US, cancer has surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death for those 85 years of age and under, reports the US National Center for Health Statistics.
Despite modern medicine cancer continues to claim the lives of many people all over the world. Throughout the years the number has increased slowly for some types of cancers, while others have seen a drastic increase in the number of new cases each year. The International Agency for Research estimates that there will be an “increase in the number of cancer cases globally to 21.7 million new cancer cases and 13 million cancer deaths” (American Cancer Society, 2016). These figures are alarming and is attributed to factors such as an aging population, smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and fewer childbirths, in economically developing countries. Similarly, in the United States the numbers are also climbing. Although there are twenty-three types or of cancer sites, the figures for colorectal, lung, breast and prostate cancers are high in many states. This paper will take a closer look at the disease, the impact on patients, families, treatment options and the required care.
