Coca-Cola: Steps Toward a Greener Future
Abstract: Global climate change is a critical, environmental issue plaguing our planet. Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels have skyrocketed since the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution thus contributing increases in average global temperature. Thus, numerous organizations and individuals have taken action to reduce their carbon footprints in order to lessen their impact on the environment. Coca–Cola, the ever-popular, soft-drink corporation is one of these organizations that is taking action to curtail its carbon dioxide emissions in order to create a greener reputation. One of the ways in which it is attempting to accomplish this goal is through the acquisition of healthful,

Moreover, in attempts to keep up with its rival, PepsiCo, in the acquisition of different brands, Coca-Cola acquired the juice brand Odwalla in 2001 since PepsiCo had already began acquiring a variety of healthful brands that claimed to be earth-friendly and a healthy choice for the consumer. Odwalla is an all-natural juice brand, which sells popular juice drinks, smoothies, and nourishment bars, which are produced, from all-natural and the best quality ingredients without any artificial additives or preservatives. Moreover, Odwalla boasts that all of its processes are eco-friendly. Thus Coca-Cola may inevitably benefit a great deal from the acquisition of such an earth-friendly brand because it may help to reduce the company’s ecological footprint. So, the question that we present and analyze throughout this investigation is, whether Coca-Cola – the all-American company – has succeeded in reducing its carbon footprint with the procurement of a greener motto.
What is a Carbon Footprint?
Global climate change is a pressing issue, yet still remains a quite disputable topic among both the public and the scientific community. Nevertheless, there
Climate change has been a subject of discussion in the media for many years, supported with the use of arguments against oil polluting the environment and extreme scare tactics of Polar ice caps flooding civilians backyards. The issue has been ignored by the majority of lay people as seeming too complicated, and with all the conflicting information in the media in the past, who can blame them? However, scientifically, climate change and what perpetrates it is fairly simple to understand and society as a whole is beginning to come to a clear consensus on climate change. Thanks in part to more readily available forms of media and information, people have become cognizant of the fact that climate change is a legitimate problem which requires immediate amelioration. While this may seem melodramatic, society is realizing that climate change is an issue which can no longer be denied if the human race wishes to continue.
Climate change is the most significant, most revisited, most controversial, most discussed climate issue in modern history. Global warming serves as a glaring demerit on the lengthy list of accomplishments of mankind: a reminder that progress coupled with reckless abandon never has a good outcome. Though its presence in the national spotlight is a recent phenomenon, the early stages of global warming were detected centuries ago.
Throughout the years climate change has been a controversial issue affecting individuals worldwide; climate change has been debated by scientists including the rest of the world. Many factors can affect climate change such as biological factors and human actions. The intricate details are what go unnoticed and unmanaged, people may be greatly against this claim. However, it is underlying factors, like landfills and driving cars, that help maintain the increasing temperature of the earth thus, climate change has become a controversial topic. There have been concerns that climate change does not exist but there is reliable proof that it does even if many scientists do not agree on the existence of climate change.
These last two election cycles have demonstrated the importance of climate change in relation to politics and the american people. What is unfortunate is that what seems to be a very crucial and real problem in our human survival, according to scientists, is being debated by people who do not have the scientific credentials to even discuss the science behind the reality of climate change. Those behind the skeptics, have funded a successful campaign against the reality of the facts and have introduce doubt into the sciences.
Global climate change is an issue being debated all over the world from the recent presidential debates late last year to documentaries being created on either side of the global warming debate. Currently, the world is experiencing many tremendous changes including warming or the earth and rising of our oceans. “The heat extremes were especially pervasive in the Arctic, with temperatures in the fall running 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal across large stretches of the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice in that region has been in precipitous decline for years, and Arctic communities are already wrestling with enormous problems, such as rapid coastal erosion, caused by the changing climate” ”(Gillis, 2). Some believe that global warming exists while
Climate change is happening – the extensive and critically accepted reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have removed any remaining doubt.
The idea of climate change, for many, is an opinionated subject with much discussion of whether it is a real issue or just a natural phenomenon. However in recent years it is clear to see that trends in the Earth’s climate and surface temperature has spiked to levels never seen before. Despite all the evidence of the high levels of greenhouses gases and the rise in temperature, many still believe that
Coca-Cola Company also has a company focus on sustainability. “Citizen Coke: The Making of Coca-Cola Capitalism” by Bartow J. Elmore tells a story of how Coca- Cola have changed its industry as well as the globe by utilizing natural resources. To start on his journey about Coca-Cola, Elmore questions the success of the company behind selling Coke, a low-priced mixture of “sugar, water, and caffeine, packed in glass, plastic, or aluminum” (Elmore 8). Elmore discovers that even though advertising plays an essential key in selling products, Coca-Cola is mostly profitable from outsourcing the supply (Elmore 9). Besides explaining his research on the Coca-Cola capitalism, Elmore also emphasizes on the ecological evidences that support it, which make this book an environmental history of Coca-Cola capitalism (Elmore 14).
The standard way of thinking about the truly phenomenal issue of Climate Change is represented by the idea of danger and damage caused by this change in the nature. However, a number of scientists-skeptics have recently suggested that consideration of climate change as a significant and destructive problem is scarcely relevant and rather groundless.
Another important weakness is that the company’s products are seen as a major cause of obesity. (Melser, 2013) The beverage sales are affected by various factors including change in trends and preferences. Recently, beverage sales have fallen because of people’s increased preference for the health drinks. Around the world, obesity is a major problem and the Coca Cola products are seen as a major cause of obesity. As people are getting health conscious they are moving towards low calorie healthy drinks. This affects coca cola’s profitability and popularity. However, the brand can overcome this situation by increasing the number of low calorie products in its brand portfolio. It will need to add more healthy choices for its customers in its product portfolio.

In just under fifty years, a topic that was once considered controversial, causing people to avoid discussions on it for reasons ranging from denial to discomfort, has evolved from those unpleasant debates to today’s friendly conversations. The topic is climate change, and the controversy surrounding it has been rooted in disagreement on what exactly causes it. Some say that climate change is a hoax and the changes are part of a natural cycle of the Earth’s climate system. Others are positive that it is the direct result of human activities and without immediate action, the planet will become inhospitable to human life. Then, there are those who are in-between, not sure which side to take, but are aware that something is happening to the global climate system.
Global climate change is one of the most controversial topics debated by scientists, particularly because the rise of climate change critically endangers human life, and all
Coca-Cola, a massive global conglomerate, is a deliciously addictive product enjoyed by various Americans. By simply taking a gander at a Coke bottle, the ingredients: carbonated water, sucrose, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, caffeine, are anything but healthy or natural.
