I have interviewed retired Deputy Daniel Banks who worked for the Denver Sheriff’s department in Colorado. Deputy Banks preformed duties for the Court Services Division for the Denver City and County Courts from June 1998-June 2015. The Denver Sheriff Deputies work with the Lindsey-Flanigan courthouse as the bailiff during all hearings that involve prisoners who are in custody in Denver. The deputies also provide courtroom security to include apprehension of court ordered remands (Denver Sheriff Department, 2014).
The deputies receive the docket the day before the scheduled hearings from the courthouse clerk so the prisoners can be prepared to appear before the judge. They must print a copy of the docket to distribute to the tiers

The dynamic at Pretrial Services could be really fast or slow. When we receive a call from the Marshal’s office about an arrest in the morning, we have to immediately meet the defender for an interview because most of the time the court hearing is set for that same afternoon. The Pretrial Service Officers have a short period of time to do the interview, check the information with a relative provided by the defendant, run background checks and write a report to be submitted to the court and both

During this documentary, the viewers get an inside look at how criminal proceedings work. In the courtroom, the most important players are the prosecution, defense, and judge. The judge is in the room to make sure the proceeding runs smoothly and to settle any arguments that arise. The prosecution is there to accuse the defendant for whatever crime he or she has been convicted of. The defense is there to defend the person being convicted of the crime. There is also a bailiff who is there to oversee the court and make sure everyone there is safe. The bailiff will bring evidence form the defense or prosecution to the judge, as nobody is to approach the bench without the judge calling attorneys to the
I conducted my observation at the Regional Justice Court in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is located at 200 Lewis Ave. I was able to see the morning docket of the Honorable Judge Diana Sullivan, who happens to be one of four pilot judges for the new Nevada Pretrial Risk Assessment (NPR). I went on the morning of Monday March 20th, to observe both her 8am docket and her 9:30am docket. The 8am docket contained initial appearances and arraignments for the in-custody suspects. There were a few status checks and arraignments for out of custody suspects as well. The 9:30 docket was entirely out of custody and there were a few initial appearances and preliminary hearings.
On Friday, March 23, 2017, I observed activities at the C.J.C. from 8:05 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. I had opportunities to view Magistrate Rice preside over bail hearings, Judge Thomas Gerhet preside over a trial and conduct ‘Drug Court’ progress hearings, and Judge Frank Palumbo conduct probation hearings. Although, I witnessed over 26 different hearings, due to assignment constraints this paper will focus largely on one case and

The ability to apply acquired knowledge in a situation outside the typical educational structure often results in exceptional learning. The experience of working with the corrections officers at the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center helped me to think critically about the application of justice. There is much that can be said specifically about the correction officers and some of their attitudes and actions. They do contribute to the atmosphere, however, changing other aspects such as the rules or the actual building has been my focus. Throughout this reflection, I will cover a typical work day with some commentary on the procedures and the environment intermixed. Working at relatively the same time each day caused a rather repetitious experience and there were only minor changes day to day. I will conclude with some notes about how justice “looks” at the JDC along with some suggestions.
Jails are locally operated, short-term incarceration facilities, usually run by the county sheriff or city police, which typically hold persons awaiting trial or other proceedings, persons charged with a misdemeanors as convicted offenders serving sentences of one year or less. The vagrant and variation of jail inmate populations cause significant problems for jail administrators, and many believe that local control compounds these (Blackburn, Fowler, Pollock). Yet local control and diverse jail functions have deep historical roots, and are not easily changed.
The following is a case study of the Denver’s Sherriff department and the decision by numerous Sherriffs to find another union representative, particular the Teamsters union. Their current union, which has represented the Denver Sherriff department since 1993, is the Financial Order Police, or FOP. According to the case, the Teamsters persuaded over 100 of the Sherriffs to join. However, they would need the vote of over half of the 700 Sherriffs. Is it a good idea for one union to challenge another to represent these deputies? I believe so. It is good practice, both personally and professionally to consider your options. It is typical for unions to be the representatives indefinitely. So, they pre-date majority of the current employees who
