Question 1 A group is best defined as two or more individuals who are connected by and within social relationships (Shaw, 1971). The executive management team of Chemco Chemicals does meet the requirements needed to form a group as they possess the following characteristics: 1. Interdependence: this refers to the dependence of others within the members of the group, therefore member A influences member B, and member B influences member A and so on (Cartwright & Zander, 1968). All the above mentioned managers depend in each other to ensure the smooth running of their departments. 2. Goals: each and every group must seek to serve a purpose of some sort. Relationships in the workplace are based on task interdependence (Forsyth, 2010). The organizational structure or composition of the group is the bridge between the organizational level strategies planning as well as the staffing decisions, therefore it is important for all of the departmental directors and managers in the case study to participate and be on the same level of understanding with the entire group. Question 4 Maude (2011) states that interaction teams need high task cohesion to be regularly successful, while for moderate or low interaction teams cohesion is less important to success. Again, we have social cohesion, the degree to which members of the group get on with one another, and task cohesion, the extent to which members cooperate to achieve the group's goals. The following factors affect cohesion: 1. Stability Cohesion in the group exists or develops when a group for the longest period has been with the same members. 2. Similarity Cohesion develops when group members share the same similarities in terms of age, sex, skills and attitudes. 3. Size A cohesive group is one that is small in size 4. Support A cohesive team tend to have managers who provide support to their group members and encourage them to support one another. 5.
