I. Background Information on Walnut

Walnut is derived from its original Spanish name Rancho de Nogales, which means “Ranch of the Walnut Trees.” Before Walnut became the beautiful suburb that it is today its primary purpose was for the grazing of cattle and sheep. Jose De la Cruz Linares received Walnut in a land grant of 4,340 acres from the San Gabriel Valley Mission. It would be nice to receive a land grant like that today. Shortly after Linares death, Walnut was acquired by Ricardo Vijar and declared a city in 1959. (2017)
