The lack of a clear guideline/framework on how they can further get promoted cause them the lack of direction in particular from the young employees perspective as they are usually more aspired and dynamic to contribute their knowledge to the company (Berglas, 2006). Despite that, the older employees did not complain about the boring job routine which can be assumed that they are basically used ' to the way ETC operates since it was established. The advancement of technology speeds up our life whereby continuous learning and innovations is the key to success. Although ETC enjoys steady growth since it established, the problem with career management finally evolved whereby the new generation employees who are searching for challenging, innovative and aspiring work has no clear direction on where they are heading to in their career with ETC. When a manager monitor and evaluate the performance of an employee, the manager might realise the talent the employee has and how this talent could contribute the overall performance of the organisation. Organisations seek to retain good performers. One of the methods used is career development. An employee could be transferred from one department to another where he/she could contribute to the success of that department at a higher level of performance. Developing an employee’s career could, also, mean enhancing their competence within the context of their position and department.

Having grown up with two brothers I was always around toys such as action figures and toy guns. I did not have a sister to play with, so I usually played with my brothers. When I played with them, I started to question why all of their toys were just for boys. Why was there not any women action figures or ones with feminine colors? Gender-stereotyped toys are prohibiting children from a range of skills.
Attracting and retaining staff can be quite the challenge, this is an area we invest a significant amount of time in. The Hudson 20/20 report states ‘employees are highlighting a lack of career progression and boredom as their biggest issues. They are looking for different experiences and acknowledging this is crucial not only for attracting new staff but for retaining existing talent.’ (Hudson 20:20 series, Paper on,
So, ever since the industrial age, to ensure the speed of production we have unconsciously created a parent/child way of working but now we are in the age of technology where most of the employees are very well educated, or reasonably educated. Ann Andrews provides a highlight about the human nature where we don’t like changes but want to bring improvement. She provides two facts where in the first fact she says that career development isn’t around much so to keep good employees around career growth may be more about encouraging them to learn more skills. Second fact is as much as the employees learn and more skills they have, they can adapt to the changing workplace. Ann Andrews also talks about seven questions for the employer to ask their employees to motivate them few of which are where would you like to be in five years?, what skills do you need to get there?, which are of interest to you?, how can I coach or mentor you?, so on and so forth (Ann Andrews, 2014).

Given that, top performers need to know how to get to where they want to be in the organization, and direction needs to be supplied. The simple truth is, when a company lacks the ability to show the individual a path of progression in order to move forward, it can be detrimental to the organization bottom-line, as turn-over affects the profits of an organzation. The result is employees will disengage and will seek other opportunities of employment elsewhere. As a final point, providing staff with a career path is similar to creating a psychological contract for an employee to stay employed with the company. By companies investing in the employee’s growth and development, they will grow in to a loyal employee and stay with the corporation. Creating a path for an employee increases employee retention. This creates a strong sense of purpose for the individual; they become connected to the organization, as they desire to be a part of the bigger picture (Gupta).
