The message of Jesus Christ and the Church is reflected though the eight Catholic Social Teaching principles. The purpose of the eight principles is to integrate faith and influence our relationship with God. The primary principle is the life and dignity of the human person. The first Catholic Social Teaching affirms that the children of God is sacred and valuable from the time of conception until death. For instance, unborn children, homeless people, and students are all equal in dignity. Additionally, the Catholic Church defends the dignity of each person, since God created people to love and serve him. Overall, the first Catholic Social Teaching principle can be applied to my four years at Maria Regina High School. For instance, every morning, Ms. Brennan recites a communal prayer with my class and prays for family members and friends. Prayer brings a connection between the sanctity of human life and dignity. Together, as a class, we pray for the well-being of each person and to keep us away from distractions. Moreover, in the theology curriculum, the religion teachers at Maria Regina mention about the importance in protecting the lives of the innocent, including newborns and homeless people. These sacred individuals are voiceless in the community and should be protected by people. In junior year, Mrs. Laino, my theology teacher, spoke about the topic of abortion and the views of the Catholic Church. Even though the Catholic Church condemns abortion, many mothers choose to abort their child. However, there are housing projects that help women rethink their decision to abort.
