Five reasons I go to the CC Parent Practicum each summer. By Kim Ford, 10th summer of parent practicum-ing First off, I am an educator. I need training because I am teaching kids. My kids. I have not done this before. Even if I had a third grader two years ago and I have another third grader this year, I have not taught this third grader. And that also means I have a sixth grader. Wow. I am pushing myself to learn and to model learning. I want to equip myself to use the tools that I have and develop those that are not in my skill-set. Not just for my children, but for myself as well. Secondly, I am a mom. I need to get outside of myself and be involved in other people’s lives. It helps me see that the world is bigger than my four. Not surprising, in the exercise of stepping out, I also realize that I have something to offer others beside a Kleenex to wipe a nose or a diaper wipe to clean a bottom (not that those things are not important)! …show more content…

As a homeschool parent, there are plenty of frustrations, unmet expectations (of myself), and basic panic feelings that I will mess up my children with this homeschool-experiment. Attending practicum reinforces to me that I am not alone. My fears and concerns are not unique to me, but they will become bigger than me if I isolate myself. I need friendship. I need iron sharpening relationships. And basically just because I “home” school does not mean I need to be isolated or alone in my home.
