Bradley McEntee 10-13-17 Central Admission Essay
“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people that are prepared for today.” These heartfelt words were spoken by the civil rights activist Malcolm X who believed that people should never stop learning. I’m very much like him in that way. I believe that everybody should have the right to a fair education. I certainly enjoy learning at my current school, Julia R. Masterman. Masterman has taught me many things that I never thought I would learn. In this essay I will discuss how my education, so far, has impacted my life through improving social skills, rigorous academics and has increased my sense of independence. While researching Central, I have seen that it is one of the most diverse schools in the country. Through my education at Masterman, I have been exposed to many different cultures. By having a diverse community, I have learned to be accepting and tolerant of other cultures. It is evident now in today’s society that people need to embrace others and celebrate their differences. As a student at your school, I look forward to continuing.

When I was a student in elementary school, I did not have to do any work and I got straight A’s. At Masterman however, I need to work extremely hard to get good grades . Although it is hard, the extreme academic challenges that I face at Masterman are beneficial to my education. Through many instances with teachers and students I have learned that life is never handed to you on a silver platter and you have to work for everything. I hope to continue this at Central. As a result of the rigorous and difficult academic program that I am in I have gained a larger sense of
Many are quick to disregard education’s role outside of the classroom. According to Mike Rose, “a good education helps us make sense of the world and find our way in it” (Rose 33). Rose emphasizes the value in the experience of education beyond the value of education for the purpose of custom or intelligence; he explores the purpose of going to school in terms of how he defines himself and his personal growth in the stages of his academic career. By reflecting on his personal experiences and how those gave him the tools applicable to his daily life, he emphasizes why education should never be overlooked. Rose’s use of referencing relatable experiences in a logical manner makes his argument persuasive to the readers and he succeeds in making the readers reconsider why education matters to them. Mike Rose’s Why School?: Reclaiming Education for All of Us effectively persuades his audience of the importance of education beyond the classroom, which proves true in our everyday lives because the essential aspect of education is what we do with it and how it helps develop one’s personal growth.
John Spayde’s article What Does it Mean to Be Educated (June 1998) offers insight into the world of philosophical questions and studies of our educational system. Spayde shares and responds to the opinions of different novelists, journalists, professors, and colleges that have taken a stance on what it means to be educated. His article briefly covers topics such as; educational decisions, financial division, entitlement, humanities, and technology. Spayde also discusses the importance of being connected and learning from a real-life experience. Spayde believes that having a connection to the world around you allows you to use any experience as a learning mechanism to further your education.
Many people see education as a privilege, however I see it as an opportunity. As an African American male I make it my mission to continue the work of those black men and women who worked tirelessly to make sure that have the option to obtain higher education. I realize that I stand on the shoulder of those men and women. Hearing and understanding their stories of doing whatever it took to make sure that they were educated – knowing that education brought them dignity and respect that no one could take away from them; helped me understand that education is the key that unlocks doors. Education will allow me to be a change agent in the world and fight against social injustices and on behave of those who are unable to speak for themselves. Education
Education is knowledge obtained in order to reach one’s full potential. A human being is not in the proper sense until they are educated. Two commencement speeches, “Failure and Imagination” by J.K. Rowling and “Real Freedom?” by David Wallace, and an article titled “The 4-Stage Response to Low Student Achievement” by John Lemuel, all have several aspects of education in common and provide knowledge and inspiration about the real idea and necessity for education. In these works, they all use personal experiences, an informal tone, and provide motivation to show why education is imperative to the development and fulfilment of life. Education is not useful for monetary purposes alone.
America is the nation in which everyone from all over the world come to get the best possible life and prosper and one of the main things is Education. There are many kids and adults going to school to further their careers. The education system in the U.S has many challenges including the neighborhood in which the student resides in,teachers, and the money. From watching Waiting for’’ Superman’’,these three factors weigh in to what the student’s existence will be in the future and the barriers they will have to face to get to the top.
America’s progression in education, through the past century, has dramatically increased. At one point in time, there was injustice in the way people were treated and educated. Now, these characteristics are still present, but their significance has depleted. Few people are still treated in certain ways solely because of their situations and disallowed to obtain quality education. In the past, education was for the rich and white which was the common occurrence and authors such as Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what they believed to be moral.
All too often, people skirt by on bare minimum; forgotten is the power of hard work. Nevertheless, from my personal experience, hard work always pays off in the end. For instance, in my junior year, my most arduous class was AP Chemistry. The goal of the class was to prepare for the AP exam in May. Therefore, my teacher always challenged my class to understand even the most perplexing chemistry theorems. Five homework problems could take three hours. A well-done lab report made my printer run out of ink. Test days were brutal. We were on track for success; however, because of excessive snowfall, my school district lost a multitude of school days. Suddenly every AP teacher was rushing to make up for lost time before AP exam season. I took it
Today’s society is filled with more access to information through education than ever before. People take the information they gather and piece it together to create perspective, and further develop it into knowledge that feeds progress in all areas of life. As society has advanced both technologically and culturally, the value and demand on education has been directly impacted. Its impact on egalitarian civilization and contribution to individualism in the United States is critical (Kraft & Furlong, 2015, pp. 342). To achieve the most our culture has to offer, students must further their education more than they have in the past. Education not only provides opportunity, but it provides access to social mobility, and grants citizens the tools that
Education is an essential part of modern society. In order for society to continue to advance, every person of every gender and race must have access to education. Unfortunately, I didn't always feel this way. Before I began high school I couldn't have cared less about academics. My free time wasn't spent on studying, but rather on frivolous pass-times that hurled me into a life of self doubt and a feeling of worthlessness. I saw others around me advancing in their education and deciding what they wanted to do with themselves, and I realized that my life was missing one important factor: A commitment to academics. I contemplated the future, which inevitably comes whether we are prepared or not, and I decided that I had one passion: Law. I began preparing for the inevitable
In my younger years, I never had to labor to meet academic standards. In elementary and middle school, a weak effort on my part was more than enough to place me at a high academic level among my peers. Once I reached high school, the expectations for me changed drastically, while my mindset struggled to keep up.
As claimed by Malcolm X, education is crucial to one's life more than any other experience because you have the opportunity to understand your history and community better. As claimed in the passage “How I Discovered Words: A Homemade Education”, Malcolm focuses on how he would spend days
Poet Adrienne Rich gave an inspiring speech during a convocation at Douglass College in 1977. Even though this was quite a few decades ago, her words are still relevant today. Education is still not taken as seriously as it should be and this is disappointing because it is the most important tool that leads to a successful life. Rich's speech describes how to "claim" an education rather than simply "receive" one, and this is something that all students need to take into consideration.
The schools I have attended over the course of my life not only helped to socialize me, but put me on a path to success. Although there is a paradox in our education system in the United States that stratifies kids based on characteristics like social class, when it is supposed to be equal (class notes, Nov. 24), this paradox didn’t affect me. The two main functions of
Education continues to be a hot topic of debate. Whether the discussion is about lack of time, lack of motivation, or a lack of funds. Students struggle with keeping up in different classes, and it’s not because they’re incapable of learning the curriculum, but because they’re not taking it in the way they should be. To truly be educated, students must have a shared environment of equality. Equality and equity is something that is truly going to bring us together to learn.
Our education system is one of the many things that is a privilege for many people, but is also something that many people don’t get the chance to get a higher education. My position on the education system is how flexible is the education system is for each individual person’s needs. For many people who end up dropping out of school is because they feel like they don’t have enough freedom within the classes they have to take. To start off the essay I want to show you four different points of view on education.
