1. The theoretical perspective that best fits me at this point in time is symbolic interactionism. 2. Symbolic interactionism focuses on the small-scale aspects of human life by looking at individuals instead of society as a whole. Symbolic interactionism has many different characteristics. First, it focuses on how society derives meaning from interactions (21). Second, symbolic interactionism looks at how things get their meanings, and how we live in a constructed reality. Finally, symbolic interactionism looks at behavior and how it doesn’t conform to societies norms (22). The first characteristic of symbolic interactionism revolves around how society drives meaning from interactions. When God first created man, he knew that it was not good for man to be alone, so he created a life-long companion for him. Today, we live in a world full of people, but we are still searching for meaningful relationships. When we are born, we have few innate behaviors that help us form interactions with each other. These skills need relationships with other to develop them. No person on Earth was meant to be alone so we all seek out relationships with one another. What makes a relationship meaningful is the things that you do together and the connections you are able to make. By looking at individuals, you are able to see how meaning is created through interaction. The Core defines a symbol as “something that stands for something else.
