AO1 – Patterns of Development This coursework will describe how children develop according to milestones from birth to eight years old. Activity 1 Emily is 17 years old and lives on the outskirts of Woking. She is currently living with her mum and attends St. John the Baptist Sixth Form College in Old Woking. Emily is a conscientious and hard working individual and her qualifications clearly support this. Having achieved excellent grades at GCSE and AS level, Emily is eager to continue with further education by hopefully attending Portsmouth University and pursuing a career in film and television production. Describe the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years, to include:
The preschool years which are the ages between 2 ½ years to five years old is an exciting time for children. It is during this time that they use all of the development learned during the infant and toddler stage to actively explore and engage in school. Preschoolers learn how to make their own choices, develop socially, and explore their environments. Parents and caregivers still play an important role in helping children during this time take initiative and explore their environments. Adult’s behaviors, attitudes, and styles of thinking contribute to preschooler’s
In later years the child becomes less dependant on their parents and moves closer to their peers. They develop a sense of right and wrong by may still adult intervention to settle arguments. They become aware of their gender and normally prefer the company of their own sex. Their behaviour differs with their emotions depending upon circumstance.
| * May be ready for toilet training * Will play happily alongside other children but doesn’t actually play with them (parallel play) * Can feed self with a spoon with no problems * Says ‘mine’ a lot when others try to play with his favourite toy * Takes exception if others get attention from his parent or carer
From 3 to 7 years the child’s movements will be more coordinated. They will learn to balance when hopping, skipping and playing with balls. The fine pincer grip when holding pens, pant brushes will be more defined.
| At the age of three the child is able to stand in one leg, jump up and down and is able to draw circles and crosses. Also the child prefers to play more games as they want to do something new all the time. There are many other physical things that I child can do at this age; throw a ball with aim, pedal, use scissors, climb with confidence, be able to paint, thread beads on a lace and is also able to catch a ball thrown gently towards them.
Standard measurements- the child’s height and weight could be tested to see if they are growing at the speed of their age. If the child is smaller than they should be that could be because they have a disability or from the characteristics of their parents.
1. From birth to 19 years of age, children and young people tend to follow a broad developmental plan. Although children and young people are different, the way they grow and develop is often quite similar. This means we can work out a pattern for development and from this we can pinpoint particular skills or milestones that most children can do at different age ranges. Milestones describe when particular skills are achieved, such as walking, usually achieved by 18 months. These milestones have been draw up by researchers looking at children’s development and working out an average from their recordings. However as children grow older the variations between individuals grow

By 1 year they could be sitting alone without support, reach out for toys and could also be mobile through crawling or shuffling. By this age a child will have started to show hand preference, can click two cubes together and will place the cubes in a box when shown how to. At 18 months a child may be able to walk alone, will push and pull toys when walking and are able to kick, roll and throw a ball. Some children are capable of using a spoon, turn a handle of a door and pull off their shoes.
