Child maltreatment is physical or sexual or emotional abuse. the most common is negligence. This neglect would be in the form of a failure to provide basic needs which includes physical or emotional neglect; absence of intervention; emotional abuse; and mental mistreatment. Physical neglect is when a child doesn't receive proper food, education, clothing, food, sufficient shelter. Emotional is when a child doesn't receive attention or affection they need. Child abuse is the physical or emotional abuse of a child by a parent, guardian, or other person. Reports of child abuse, including sexual abuse, beating, and murder, have jumped in the United States and some authorities believe that the number of cases is largely under reported. Child neglect is also included in legal definitions of child abuse to cover instances of malnutrition, desertion, and inadequate care of a child's safety. When reported, inadequate foster care services and a legal system that has trouble accommodating the suggestible nature of children, who are often developmentally unable to distinguish fact from make-believe, complicate child abuse cases

Child abuse is an issue within society that effects the lives of not only the victims but also the lives of many people in the social order. Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in non-accidental injury or harm and which cannot be logically explained. There are several forms of abuse and neglect and many state governments have developed their own legal description of what constitutes child maltreatment for the purposes of removing a child and prosecuting a criminal charge. Child neglect is a form of maltreatment. In other words, it is the failure of parents, guardians or caregivers to meet the child’s needs such as adequate supervision, clothes, shelter, food, health treatments, education and nurturing their emotional, physical, cognitive and mental development. In this paper, we will talk about early childhood neglect from ages birth to five years old, and the benefits of child welfare-supervised children 's participation in center-based Early Care and Education (ECE). Additionally, we will focus on an evidence-based intervention in which we will explore the program’s benefits and positive outcomes for the children that attend the program in contrast to the ones that do not. Moreover, we will identify the correct system of care and some of the programs within the tri-county area that might implement this intervention. Additionally, we will talk about the demographics of the children and setting of which intervention is best for them. Lastly, we will give an estimation of how many sessions are needed for the intervention to work, and what sorts of trainings might be necessary for the well-being of the child.

Child maltreatment, also referred to as child maltreatment and neglect, includes all the various forms of abuse ranging from physical, emotional and sexual abuse to neglect and exploitation. This type of abuse can result in the potential or actual harm to a child's health, there development and dignity.

Most children will sustain bruises and minor injuries as part of their every-day life. This is how the study was done to get a up to date examined on youth that had been though protective services and vulnerability factors in foster care. Some individual predicted placing youth in the foster care system would cause an impact in the maltreatment and physical abuse. Characteristics include; bruising on parts of the body (trunk, face , upper arms or any other unusual places), burns, bite marks, fractures (particularly spinal). In under twos you may also notice swelling, an inability to move limbs that they should be able to move, unexplained injuries, reoccurring injuries, withdraws from physical contact (flinching or a fear of adults), the child may also wear “cover up” clothing.

It is very sickening to realize how many children are abused. I fully believe that the individuals who hurt children are evil and deserving of the harshest punishment available. Maltreatment of a child is considered to be any type of abuse such as; physical, sexual, psychological, medical, and neglect. The top form of maltreatment in regards to children in 2010 was neglect at 78.3%. To me this number was a bit of a shocker. When I think of maltreatment I think of physical and sexual abuse. I know that neglect is also a type of maltreatment but it is not what my mind quickly goes to. Surprisingly only 17.6% were physically abused and 9.2% were sexually abused. In the beginning of this course, maltreatment meant getting hit in areas of your body besides your buttocks. But as this class progressed through this class it gets much deeper than that. When a parent or individual who is legally responsible for a child causes, “harms to a child, or places a child in imminent danger” (OCFS n.d) by not supplying a child with basic care and needs, such as “food, clothing, shelter, education or medical care” (OCFS n.d) when a guardian has the financial ability to provide for the child. Abandonment and inadequate supervision of a child by a parent who is using drugs or alcohol while caring for a child are also considered maltreatment.
