Psychology has long been of interest to me mainly for personal and relational understanding and development. Personally, however, psychology in the secular world holds little appeal. Secular psychology, I have found, tends to adhere to either a materialistic worldview or mystical perspective to which I do not subscribe. Psychology, when integrated effectively with Christianity, is both helpful and intriguing. Incorporating the two disciplines, psychology and Christianity, produces an improved psychology and a healthier Christianity. The insights gained through Christian psychology have not only aided in personal growth and development but has also allowed me to offer comfort and support to friends who were experiencing difficult and painful circumstances. Part of God’s calling for me is to offer healing and freedom to others. When Jesus was here on earth, His mission was “to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” (Isaiah 61:1, New International Version). Jesus’s purpose of healing and freeing people is what He is actively pursuing today. Moreover, He has invited me to join Him in the same endeavor—to help people find restoration and increased freedom in their lives. I could have pursued several different directions to fulfill the calling God has given me. A career in the medical field seemed an obvious choice; however, the biological sciences are unappealing as are blood and internal organs and functions, which leave me somewhat queasy. Philosophy and theology are other directions I considered. Being a pastor and helping others to find meaning and hope in relationship with Jesus Christ has a certain appeal. Understanding human nature and behavior, however, kindles far greater interest than any other option to fulfill my
