ADVOCACY PAPER
ON
STANDARDIZATION OF CAMOUFLAGE MILITARY UNIFORMS
1. This position paper will advocate for the standardization of camouflage (camo) military uniforms. It will discuss the recent timeline of changes to service specific uniforms and the costs associated, potential effects on morale across the services, and the overall positive outcome that standardization will make when considering Department of Defense (DoD) spending.
2. Standardizing the camo uniform across our military branches is the right decision. There are currently 10 different camo uniforms in use today with more in development. Since 2002, the four branches of military have introduced seven different uniforms all containing different patterns and colors. Prior to 2002,

The main objective of camo is survivability and to reduce our military forces detection in combat. Rep. Bill Enyart stated “If you want to separate yourself, do it in your dress uniform. It doesn’t do us any good to have a battlefield where you have three or four uniforms. The deployed environment is shifting to a joint service effort. I had the privilege to deploy to a combined engineering directorate where I worked with the Army, Navy, and Air Force. We all wore the Operational Camouflage Pattern uniform and it truly felt like we were working as one team for the same mission. With service identity and morale issues aside, the bottom line is costs savings for development and production. It is estimated that the Army alone could save about $82 million if other branches would work together to develop a new camo design. Eliminating multiple uniforms across the service branches would also allow the military to shift the focus to other priorities rather than spending precious time and money on unnecessary uniform design.

With that being said, as more research about the benefits of uniforms develops, the more common dress code policies are becoming in the United States. With the appropriate research, school officials, parents, and students are becoming more aware of the importance of enforcing dress code policies. As research has shown, uniforms can create a sense of unity and develop self-confidence in students (Caruso). Uniforms can also improve academic performance and limit violence among students (King). While opponents will argue that there is not enough evidence to back up the value of a dress code, research proves that uniforms can be beneficial to school systems. Just as Japan and South Korea have implemented dress codes in their school systems, the time has come for the United States to recognize the value of school uniforms (Yeung). The question still remains, should all schools in the United States be required to enforce a dress code policy? In order to provide optimum learning in the classroom, uniforms are needed now more than
The idea of school uniforms seems comparable to an old-schooled idea that seems to penetrate across school boards everywhere every year. Although wearing uniforms is mostly practiced in private schools, more and more schools yearly are rallying together to introduce school uniforms to the students. For numberless schools across the nation, wearing uniforms is the norm and a wide variety of the students say they enjoy knowing what they will be wearing the next day. As each country begins to seize the nation with higher scores of each school, countless numbers of people begin to wonder if the drastic change in scores could be the uniforms. In spite of whether or not schools are deciding to switch the dress code to uniforms, there should be one decision in the end, which should be to enforce uniforms in all South Harrison School Corporations Schools.
School uniforms have become more a distraction for teachers/administration than it has for parents and/or students. Teachers and Administrators perceptions of a uniform violation/infraction seem to have gotten out of hand. It further goes on to explain: optional articles, criteria’s to determine hardship status, and compliance measures.
The beginning of military uniforms developed when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army Ordinance in 1645 (BCW Project). “The New Model Army consisted of 22,000 professional soldiers, 15,000 were infantry men and 7,000 cavalries led by Oliver Cromwell” (History). A fragment of the transition from personal clothes to uniforms, was to establish an indistinguishable attire for all the British military soldiers. This change was the commencement of the infamous Redcoats.
There is a common misconception that the Civil War was fought between “the northern blue and the southern grey”, when, in reality, uniforms in the Federal Army ranged from grey, blue, green, to even bright red. Each regiment, many were state militias, varied largely in appearance because of esprit-de-corps and location from which men volunteered. To preserve individuality and maintain pride in units, enlisted infantry uniforms from II Corps, Army of the Potomac, were, at times, vastly different in aesthetics and construction, while others utilized “standard” federal uniforms, depending on material availability and
1. Today when looking at members of the Coast Guard there is very little difference in uniform to distinguish the senior enlisted and Officer Corps from that of the Junior Enlisted Corps. The Coast Guard believes that there is a distinct difference between a First Class Petty Officer and a Chief but has gone away from making that difference easy to see from a distance. The Navy goes so far as to change the entire color and style of their uniform as well as the change of the combination cover when a member is advanced to the pay grade of E-7. This is due to the belief that the amount of responsibility one takes on with this advancement warrants the clear delineation, one that can be seen right away. Furthermore, even today when going through the Chiefs Call to Indoctrination process, all Navy and Coast Guard Chiefs build a hat box solely for the purpose of housing their new combination cover, a cover that in today’s Coast Guard members have been wearing since boot camp. The Coast Guard used to make the same uniform change as the Navy, and we have strayed from this tradition, strayed at the cost of a loss of respect in this advancement. The Coast Guard should visibly distinguish E-7 and above by making a change in the uniform regulations and making E-7 and above only authorized to wear the combination cover.
Despite their reported benefits, mandatory uniforms are controversial because a lot of parents and students don’t like the idea of forcing children to dress alike, which they say suppresses freedom of expression. Some families complain about the financial burden of purchasing uniforms in addition to their kids’ other clothing. Years ago, parents also complained that it was difficult to find uniforms, but that ceased to be an issue after large chain stores like Target and Wal-Mart began selling
The history of school uniforms in the United States public schools begins with small underprivileged school of Cherry Hill Elementary in Maryland and the domino effect that happened soon after in the years after. The popularity of school uniforms can greatly be credited to the Long Beach, California study and President Bill Clinton’s speech on the topic. At first, school uniforms were only for the private or Catholic private schools however the school uniform trend spread to other public schools to adopt the “preppy look” and success. This has now set new standard for the United States school system. A brief history of school uniforms will give a significant insight on the growing development that is transforming American schools.
In the past 2 years, the United States Navy has implemented several changes to their uniform components. The uniform changes which have drawn the liveliest debates are those that deal directly with our female uniform components. These changes have long term implications for the direction of our Naval Service, our traditions and our heritage. Senior leadership, to include The Secretary of the Navy, expressed that it was important to change the style of our uniforms in order to fully integrate our female shipmates into the Navy. It will help level the field and to garner respect for our female Sailors. However, the issue rests deeper than outward look and design of a uniform and why Navy uniforms should not be used as a means to achieve gender equality.
The argument whether uniforms should be allowed in school has been debated over the last few decades. Implementing a uniform policy within schools would help reduce the rise of violent crimes. In today's high schools, too many innocent youths become fatalities due to gang warfare that has spread into the school system. Many parents feel that if a uniform policy was implemented the spread of gang warfare and the idea children have to have name brand clothing would decrease drastically. However others are worried that this policy would infringe on students First Amendment rights. Yet there are other parents that all worried that the uniforms will cost too much. In the following essay these issues will be addressed.
What comes to your mind when camo or camouflage is said? Well, the first thing that came a across my mind was the soldier’s uniform. I had never been introduced Camo Underwear before and when I was, it came to me as a pleasant surprise. I thought that I will be a little soldier with these. Jokes apart, the respective print in men’s underwear has gone from nowhere to a huge popularity.
I had never thoroughly taken into consideration the benefits and disadvantages that school uniforms presented until my family and I vacationed in England in early spring of 2015. While traveling we met up with a woman that my mother had known in High school. The woman had moved to the UK, and since had gotten married and had three children. One of the many conversations we had was about the British school environment and how it differed from American school standards. The mother had explained that the school her children attended required a school uniform, as most schools do in the UK. Those conversations sparked a curiosity in me that I had to quench. What are the benefits and disadvantages of school uniforms, and should we implement them more so in American schools? Although the questions I had were fairly straight forward, the answers proved to be more in-depth. Through my research I discovered several new ideas and values. As I read various different articles on the subject I began to develop an opinion of my own. Combined with my own personal experience, all though it be brief, and with the documented experiences and statistics, I can only pronounce that all the evidence leads to the idea that uniforms indeed are a treasured asset to our schools.
Until President Clinton called attention to the issue in his State of the Union address, mandatory public school uniform policies were sporadic local occurences. A few school districts had been quietly experimenting with uniforms for years, but the issue caught President Clinton's eye after the Long Beach, California school district released some numbers suggesting that after only one year, its mandatory uniform policy had not only brought about significant decreases in vandalism and fighting, but had also led to higher test scores. Now that the President's endorsement has elevated school uniforms into the realm of federal education policy, a question needs to be answered: Are uniforms a good idea?
Individuality is what makes a student unique, but with the introduction of school uniforms, they create militaristic ideals damaging the student’s environment instead of promoting diversity. Some argue that school uniforms are beneficial to students and education, but a plethora of research shows that there are more negatives than positives. Among those are the lack of self expression in schools, the cost involved in having uniforms, the violation of rights and time consumption, and how there is no academic gain correlated to uniforms.
A. Thesis Statement- Wearing school uniforms in public schools has numberless amounts of positive benefits both at school and at home.
