When we enter colleges or universities, we notice the clean-up of words, ideas and subject matters that might cause discomfort or give an offence. For instance, colleges and universities are avoiding these due to how it may cause students to feel uncomfortable and offended by a word or phrases. However, there is a therapy that can help us treat this to avoid discomfort and also stop colleges from taking away the freedom of speech. Considering this matter, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt argue in their essay “The Coddling of the American Mind,” in how to fix these situations that colleges and universities have. Both authors explain what colleges and universities should do to promote cognitive behavioral therapy while reducing emotional reasoning. This will benefit any college and university yet, there will be some disadvantages and obstacles to try to implement cognitive behavioral therapy.
First of all, what is cognitive behavioral therapy? Cognitive behavioral therapy is a modern embodiment of this ancient wisdom (pg.9). It helps treat mental illness, depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and addictions. Furthermore, it is proven that this treatment teaches thinking skills that people can continue to use even after the therapy stops. Therefore, this therapy will guide people to view the world more accurately than, to see everything as an offense or a rude action. This therapy will reduce emotional reasoning with you not absorbing any type of negativity.

Did the world completely eliminate four leaf clovers from the world to accommodate her loss? No, not at all— the elderly women had to mentally prepare herself to handle the mental distress that could come. The students demand security from words and ideas that are uncomfortable in the learning environment. Lukianoff and Haidt cover every aspect concerning the views through the students, therapist, professors, and even the general public. There is a serious epidemic of micro-aggressions, trigger words, and an over-use of vindictive protectiveness. The two author’s ideals stated within are realistic, however, getting to the conclusion is a bit hectic and spastically placed throughout.
There are multiple components of cognitive behavioral therapy. People develop faulty beliefs throughout trials in life. Thoughts and feelings can become a dysfunctional part of a person’s character. Faulty belief systems can affect a person’s life in a multitude of ways. Faulty belief systems can develop into problematic behaviors that negatively affect a person’s relationships with family, friends as well a person’s work relationships. One example, if a person thinks they are unattractive, that person may develop a low self esteem. A person with a low self esteem can make choices regarding relationships that may be detrimental to the person.
The intended outcome of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is to help people learn about healthier pathways to coping with distressing thoughts; this type of therapy will in turn reduce avoidance or other unsettling behaviors. The idea behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that if someone can change how they gauge their surroundings or thoughts and feelings, anxiety and avoidance may be reduced, making the persons mood and overall quality of life much better (Tull, 2013).
