It is because including parents, school staff, teachers and children can help to build mutual trust and respect between each other. It’s also an opportunity for the parents to enhance their skills to help their children’s at home. The teacher can ask the parents to share their difficulties when they are helping their children with the schoolwork. The teacher can listen to the parents and organize activities to support and provide resources to help them. The relationship between the children, parents and teachers should be very open and supportive. It is because children learn the best where they are encouraged and supported in their lives. Parents and family expect their child to receive a challenging and successful education. They want the education system to benefit their child's academic needs. Teachers have to gather information about home literacy practices and dialects spoken in order to provide a meaningful and relevant literacy program (Makin, Jones Diaz and McLachlan, 2007). Information related to children’s interests gathered from family can assist in the settling in process and in ongoing programming. Incorporating diversity into the program can be authenticated by getting parents involved (Birckmayer, Kennedy and Stonehouse, 2008). Teachers must attempt to actively involve parents in all aspects of the classroom. Despite efforts being made to involve parents, it is inevitable that some parents will show little interest or have little time to become involved; therefore, teachers must respect the level of involvement that a parent chooses. Utilising information from parents can assist teachers in developing relationships with their students.

During the placement I was able to spend time observing interactions between parents, children and staff. I witnessed many positive aspects in the schools approach to engaging parents and was particularly impressed by their open door policy for parents and the support provided to families in times of need by the learning mentors. As part of the admission process to the school, staff visit the parents and child at home and discuss the implementation of the home-school agreement (appendix 1.b). This agreement sets out the expectations of each of the parent, school and child in regard to their actions and attitude towards their time in school. This is often one of the first interactions teacher and parents have and Grayson (2011) suggests most teachers report these home visits to have a lasting positive effect on the child and parent-teacher relationship. During the school’s inspection in 2014 Ofsted identified relationships across the school and with parents as a key strength.
Communication between teachers and the parents of students is essential for the growth and success of the student both inside and outside of the classroom. This communication is best achieved through parent conference opportunities. One way that this is achieved is through regular open house nights. This is where parents, and other members of the community, are invited to come to the school and talk to the teachers and other faculty at the school. Another conference opportunity presents itself in a scheduled appointment between the teacher and the parent. This will enable the parent to meet face-to-face with their child’s teacher during a time that is more convenient to them, as these appointments can occur before, during, and after school. Additionally, conferences can take place over the phone. This is a convenient way for both parties to communicate effectively in a way that works best for them.
The symbiotic relationship between teachers and parents is crucial to the educational success of a student. Parents must be involved with their child’s education through consistent attendance of IEP meetings and advocate for their child and their needs at school. Teachers can encourage parent involvement through, traveling notebooks home and note home programs which establish an open line of communication between teacher and parent. Parent-teacher conferences are a great way for teachers and parents to be involved in the success of the student's educational experience.
The content of Chapter 9, Learning About Family Structures &Fairness discussed the family structure of young children. Over the years, the perception of family structure has changed. Today, family structure is not considered to be a mother and father co-parenting in the same house but rather the family members you live. It is important that educators support children despite of their family structure. Sparks and Edwards (2012) stated that " early childhood educators may need to broaden their own concept of family to include all the different varieties and structures of families that exist in our society," (p.112).
The research topic that will serve as the basis of my advocacy action plan is “Parent Engagement in the Early Childhood Setting.” The program I am currently interning at lacks in parent participation throughout the program. Participation includes volunteering, running for policy council and attending parent workshops and meetings. I want to explore how important parent participation is in the program and develop my advocacy plan around this idea. Parent participation and engagement is important because parents have the opportunity to be involved in their children's education. Parental input can assist teachers in planning developmental goals and implementing teaching strategies to best assist their children.
The areas that trailed me most during my self-evaluation were the collaboration/inclusion and critical thinking disposition. The two types of disposition are inter-related. You need to critically analyse an opinion while working together as team members in achieving company set goals and objectives.

There are several benefits to developing good home-school connections. Teachers can observe students outside of a school context, and parents can also view teachers from another perspective. Furthermore, knowing students ' families and their backgrounds allow for more personalised lessons where children benefit more (Jensen, 2006). While conducting family visits, teachers can see if the family is going through any difficulties and then offer any assistance. Additionally, creating personal connections with students and families, can have a positive impact on student behaviour within school (Stetson et al, 2012). Creating home-school connections can also allow students to understand that their parents and family are valuable resources and partners (Allen, 2010).

The number of homeschooling is increasing every day. According to scholars, homeschooling has tripled in the last 10 years (Home Schooling debate, 2003). The number one reason for this is due to religious issues. However, there are a lot of negative effects and some serious issues about educating children at home due to the lack of parents’ teaching experiences, socialization, and motivation.
However, when deciding whether to place a child in a public school or whether to home school a child, it is best to take into account the possible cons of home schooling. The parent, now teacher, must keep in mind that their job is to educate their child. All other career possibilities or aspirations must be put on hold. The parent’s main focus must now be on educating their child. The parent must be willing to take out the time and energy to devote themselves to education.
