The American Dream today seems dismissed as an idealized cliché. I know better. I am a second-generation Albanian-American, political refugees’ grandchild, son of a single mother whose sacrifices facilitated my success. I would never have sung for the Metropolitan Opera had my grandfather not toiled in a deli; my working on cutting-edge biomedicine at Harvard Medical School would not be possible had my mother not had opportunities to be an entrepreneur. The first in my family to graduate from college, I hope to honor their sacrifice by using my medical research education to improve others’ lives.

Once diagnosed, I found the paucity of reliable, concrete treatments shocking; but, using extensive PubMed research, I cured myself within a year. I overcame GERD by changing habits, chugging gallons of aloe vera leaf juice and essentially understanding my body’s natural processes and ethnobotany, which I found personally relieving and intellectually fascinating. My bravado was initially greeted by a host of rejections before fortune smiled upon me when Harvard’s and Yale’s medical schools called for summer internship interviews. Life took an unexpected turn when I started my six-week internship with Harvard’s Drs. Leonora Balaj and Xandra Breakefield. I began studying exosomes, cell-derived nanoparticles housing manifold diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and potential to revolutionize cancer diagnostics via liquid biopsy techniques.
