INTRODUCTION
The Oxford Dictionary defines communication as “The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium ”. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour . To help understand the concept of communication and how it works better, various scholars have developed theories of communication.
1.1 APPLY RELEVANT THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION TO HSC CONTEXTS First, the Humanistic Theory seeks to capture the humanity in individuals first before the complexities of the world. According to psychologists Abraham Maslow, Gardner Murphy and Carl Rogers, communication between the service user and provider should be “client-centred” . This means that relationships between service providers and users should be based on the fact that the service user is a human being first before a client, and service providers must acknowledge the individual’s human qualities and attend to their presented health care issues with dignity and respect . It is a more realistic view, according to which human beings, not words, possess meaning . A shortcoming of this theory however is the fact that human beings must apply words or some type of communication to apply meaning to the situation being treated. For example, a carer might not always be pre-emptive to the needs of the individual and most times needs the individual to guide them so that they can figure out what the individual needs at the moment.

Communication can be used to bring out changes in attitudes and used to motivate people and establish and maintain relationships, it is also vital for seeking and providing information.

The Business Dictionary’s definition of communication paints a bigger picture of the act, defining it as a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange (encode-decode) information, news, ideas and feelings, but also create and share meaning . With these in mind, it is easy to define communication as the giving, receiving or exchanging of information, opinions or ideas so that the message is completely understood by everybody involved . In Health and Social Care, Communication is extremely important to ensure that the right message is passed on to the right person in the right manner, based on their needs and preference, to prevent misunderstanding and to maximize on the smooth operation of the organisation ultimately to foster a save environment for all the persons involved, service users and providers. Communication, the act or process of using words, sounds signs or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else. (Merriam Webster dictionary). There are four forms of communication; verbal, non-verbal, written and visual.
The definition of communication varies when it comes to the situation. Communication can be derived from a conversation amongst one another or communication can lead to an interview (for a job, a case, or to obtain information). “Human communication is the way in which humans exchange meaningful ideas with one another” (Justak, 2014). Communication is the first instrument that humans used in their process to socialize, interact with others can be defined as the process of sending information, to convince others to understand our point of view and build relations. Behavioral psychology signifies the response of behavior resulting from the stimulus in the environment and within us. It associates with psychology that links with the study and alteration of people’s performance through the behavior of their actions, thoughts and sentiments (Heffner, n.d.). According to Watson, the theory to respondent conditioning in other terms classical conditioning is based on Pavlov’s observations that are able to justify all aspects of human psychology (McLeod, 2014). It is considered to be a theory that involves learning a new behavior through the procedure of association (McLeod, 2014). For an example in Pavlov’s experiment, the dog is offered food along with a ringing bell (McLeod, 2013). After a repetition of this process, the bell is ringing on its own. In this essay I will outline the main principles of both operant and classical conditioning methods and discuss what both theories have contributed to the field of psychology and what they have taught us about the way in which some human behaviour occurs.
Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behaviour. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or more living creatures1. Effective communication is a reciprocal interactive process in which sender and recipient have responsibilities to ensure that a message has been received and understood.
Throughout the history of psychology and the studying of human behaviors, one event has stood out more so than any other; Pavlov’s dog and classical conditioning. Many other theorists such as Skinner and Bandura have built on Pavlov’s experiment on classical conditioning to form operant conditioning but the roots trace back to Pavlov. An attempt to recreate the experiment on other animals has proven to be successful. While Pavlov was the father of modern learning it was Skinner who saw there are association between behaviors and their outcomes that humans are able to recognize.
There are many definitions for the term, “communication”. According to Samovar, Porter, McDaniel, and Roy (2015), communication is the ability to share ideas and feelings, and is the basis of human contact. Communication can also be defined as the process of transmitting information and common understanding from one person to another (Keyton, 2011). In my own words, I would define communication as sending and receiving message through verbal and nonverbal modes between individuals or groups.
Communication is sending and receiving information between two or more people. The person sending the message is referred to as the sender, while the person receiving the information is called the receiver. The information conveyed can include facts, ideas, concepts, opinions, beliefs, attitudes, instructions and even emotions. Communication in its most basic sense is transferring information from sender to receiver. Communicating is the act of conveying information for the purpose of creating a shared understanding.

A significant piece of several psychological theories in the late nineteenth century was introspection, which is “the examination or observation of one's own mental and emotional processes” (Press, 2013). In retort to this theory behaviorism came about. Behaviorism is predominantly concerned with observable and measurable aspects of human behavior. In other words behaviorism does not look at the biological aspects but it suggests that all behaviors are learned habits and changes in response to the environment. It endeavors to explain how these particular habits are formed. Behaviorism claimed that the causes of behavior was not necessarily found in the complexities of the mind but could be observed in one’s immediate environment, from stimuli that produced, reinforced, and punished certain responses also known later on as conditioning. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that the scientist began to discover the actual systems to learning, thereby laying a foundation for behaviorism. A theorist by the name of Ivan Pavlov was a major contribution to the discovering of significant behavioral theories.
Communication is a process where we share our feelings, ideas, thoughts, suggestion, experience, feedback, opinions, etc. It’s a dialogue in which the sharing of meaningful information are constantly coming in and going out between two or more people in order
