There are many risks to playing sports but the biggest one is injuries. In invasion games like lacrosse and soccer you risk being pushed, tackled, kicked, and other physical “attacks”. In other games like tennis you can get hurt from a fracture or sprain. In almost every sport you could be injured.
One of the main issues that female athletes run into is that the media tends to focus on the male injuries and the severity of their injuries and completely overlook the females injuries. Everyone who commits to playing for an organized team knows that there is a large risk involved with the time you are stepping onto the field. The most common sport that athletes are being injured is in the sport of football. The reason is because it is so widely played by all ages, from Pop Warner all the way to the NFL. The NFL is doing everything they can to prevent head injuries in the sport of football.
On chw.com it states, “In 1998, nearly 200,000 children ages 5-14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for basketball related injuries. Majority of children were boys (70%)”. (Sports Injuries). It is saying that there are more injuries treated in the emergency room for basketball than hockey. Annually there are about 215,000 kids ages 5-14 are treated in the emergency room for football related injuries, in basketball there are more than 170,000, and in hockey there are only around 20,000 treated in the emergency room per year. Many people say that hockey is just as dangerous as football, but almost 11 times more injuries occur in football than hockey. Football, wrestling, and cheerleading send athletes to the emergency room every 25 seconds. While reading this there were probably about 6 kids sent to the emergency room just from those three sports. Athletes risk their careers for an education in the long run for a hope at getting a deal in a pro league or scoring an education. Athletes know the risk of playing the sport but love the activity enough to stay throughout the years. Sports are very dangerous physical and mentally. Student athletes are putting themselves at risk for long-term health problems. According to a study, found that 70 percent of athletes said they had practiced or played with an injury, compared with 33 percent of non-athletes (Robert Preidt, 2014). Forty percent of athletes diagnosed with osteoarthritis after college, compared with 24 percent of non-athletes (Robert Preidt, 2014). Student athletes are constantly getting concussions.

Many of these injuries are caused because public high school do not provide enough professional care for athletes. College football players are naturally at risk of injury. The reasons why are due to the aggressiveness of the sport,lack of proper technique, technology,and equipment used by players. The crazy thing is however, that's what we sign up for on a regular basis. There have been rule changes to help avoid injury, but a few rules isn't what is going to fix things. There must be new gear and medical test to make sure players are safe. If players wish to continue playing for a long period of time attention to their bodies is a necessity. Far too many football players careers are cut short due to brain injury and damage.Football players need better medical attention for their bodies.
