This is a profile of the school community for North Vista Elementary school. I have taught at this school for over ten years and served on the PTA Executive Board for three years. My children attend this school as well. Information for this assignment was gathered from online sources, news articles, phone interviews, and personal experience. Florence School District One is a diverse school district as a whole, and that diversity is a result of the merging of various communities within Florence School District One. For this assignment, I will focus on the North Florence community where my school is situated. The North Florence community has always been one of the poorest communities in Florence.
According to the City of Florence website,

I gathered this information from online sources with data by zip codes and city sections. The data is from 2013, but still paints a clear picture of the North Florence area in comparison with city averages. There are approximately 5,447 residents in the North Florence area. The population is 98% African American. The average household income is $23,336 with 29.5% of people living below poverty level. The unemployment rate for the North Florence area is 21.6 %. There are not many major businesses in the North Florence area other than the schools. The only exception is a …show more content…
Based on the information gathered from the City-Data website, the average home value in North Florence is $72,000. The average home value of the city of Florence is $151,500 according to the 2014 Census estimates. As noted in earlier statistics, North Florence is a poor area where the majority of households have a low socioeconomic status. The lack of job opportunities in North Florence, a slow housing market in the area are the causes of poverty in the community and creates a disadvantage for some of our students. I have spoken with the principal, Sharon Dixon, on numerous occasions about the effects of this on our students. Many of the students come to the school with a lower vocabulary than students from wealthier parts of Florence. Much of that has to do with the lack of education of the parents. Many hold high school diplomas, but only a few of our parents hold college degrees. The education level of the parent is a factor in the preparation of children for school. A lot of the families also receive government assistance and do not have access to technology or extra learning opportunities. Many parents work multiple jobs or shift jobs and do not always have the time to help their students academically. This puts the children behind before they even begin. North Vista has some of the lowest test scores in the district, but the principal has been working closely with
The City of Bend, Oregon Government consists of approximately 500 employees across thirteen different divisions. These divisions are Police, Fire, Community Development, Public Works, etc and are all coordinated under the City Manager’s office. Bend’s government style is called a “weak mayor” form of city government, in that the citizens elect a city council, which then elects a mayor from among the council members. The city council and mayor, then hire a City Manager to run the day to day operations of the city. In doing this form of government, the City Manager is not directly accountable to the citizens and can focus on the needs of the city and its employees. At the same time, the City Council can only provide direction to the city manager and is accountable to the citizens. The city employees in this case are led by the city manager as directed by city council. The community leadership environment in this case is established by council to provide direction to the city manager.
Miss Kane’s first grade class at Lutie Lewis Coates Elementary School (also known as Coates Elementary) has twenty students and seventeen of them are considered English Language Learners (ELL) (E. Kane, Personal Communication, October 4, 2016). This is very frustrating for both Miss. Kane and her students because it is very difficult to communicate with many of her ELLs. Out of Miss Kane’s twenty students eight students are Hispanic, five Indian, five Black, and three White. Miss Kane’s class is very diverse and this allows students to feel more accepted because not all students are similar. Coates Elementary as a whole is very diverse: Asian 28.86%, Black 18.26%, Hispanic 37.32%, and White 12.08% (Fairfax County Public Schools, 2015). Miss Kane’s classroom reflects similar diversity as Coates Elementary does. Both Miss. Kane and the Coates staff really show their appreciation for diversity and attempt to treat all children equally giving all students equal opportunity. Coates Elementary is a Title I school; about fifty percent of students receive free and reduced lunch (Fairfax County Public Schools, 2015). This school was placed in the center of poverty and many of these students who participate in the free and reduced lunch program are English Language Learners.
As a little boy, Michael moved to Lodi when he was 3 years old. His parents found a big house that was just enough to fit 6 family members. The Wilson’s lived close to an elementary school named “Washington School,” that 3 of the 4 children attended. 16 years ago, Lodi was mostly an Italian town that wasn’t diverse when it came to the school system. A lot has changed since then but only one of the children attend Lodi’s public schools now, the school are much more diverse compared to what they were a decade ago.
I teach in the Westside Consolidated Number Five School District in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The school district is a consolidation of three small rural town school districts Bono, Egypt, and Cash, Arkansas in 1968. I met with my mentor Mr. Scott Gaunt the school district superintendent on January 18, 2017 between meetings with district leaders and countywide superintendents. We met and discussed the community relations plan and identified the two most important issues for our district as identified in the poll by the Phi Delta Kappan and the Gallop poll. The issues were the lack of financial support for the school district to provide an adequate education for students and the testing and regulations imposed on school districts that lower educational time for students while in school.

A community health assessment is a fundamental instrument of public health practice. Its objective is to depict the health of the community, by presenting information on health standing, community health needs, resources, and epidemiologic and other studies of present local health problems. It seeks to recognize target populations that may be at augmented risk of poor health results and to increase a better understanding of their needs, as well as evaluates the larger community surroundings and how it relate to the health of people. It also identifies those areas where better information is desired, particularly information on health differences amid different subpopulations, quality of health care, and the incidence and severity of disabilities in the population. The Community Health Assessment is the foundation for all local public health development, giving the local health component the instance to recognize and network with key community leaders, businesses and concerned residents about health priorities and concerns. This information shapes the foundation of improving the health status of the community by way of a strategic plan (The Municipal Public Health Services Plan Community Health Assessment Guidance and Format, n.d.).

As a new charter school located in a vibrant neighborhood in Wilmington, our school has worked directly with neighbors, community groups, local nonprofit organizations and local elected and government leaders to establish a good relationship and prepare the way for our students and families to benefit from our neighborhood and location. The Brandywine neighborhood where our school is located is in the center of downtown Wilmington, easily accessible to many local businesses and government agencies, and area neighborhoods, by foot and by public transportation. However my community is struggle with funding. An idea or strategy to address the funding situation is to have a fundraiser to raise money and bring awareness to the situation. Rural areas are disappearing as we know it. With the population raising villages becoming towns and towns becoming cities. With rural, it is described as a place that has more of an countryside than a town. Research is conducted in a variety of different ways using different methods and methodologies. How these methods are used is imperative to how clear and accurate research will be. Community needs assessment is a research method used by many researchers that assists in finding gaps within a particular target group within a particular community. Throughout this paper I will discuss what a community needs assessment is and when and how it is used. I will also discuss some of the strengths and limitations of this method. I then continue to explain some theoretical and practical perspectives when dealing with this method and how it would apply when conducting your own research in a
