Community Characteristics The community that my group and I chose to assess was Fishtown. It is a small neighborhood compared to some of the others in Philadelphia but it comes with a lot to offer. On the outskirts of the neighborhood, specifically, along Girard Ave and Frankford Ave, there are a variety of businesses. The vast majority of the businesses in Fishtown are coffee shops, small restaurants, and bars. It also has butchers, boutiques and small thrift and antique store. As you go deeper into the neighborhood, you will find many families. Fishtown was always described as a working class neighborhood but the businesses in the earlier years where different. In 1704, a wealthy English merchant by the name of Anthony Palmer, began
A community is a group of people who work together towards a common goal and share a common interest. Lack of such a quality can and most likely will cause a struggling town or city to fall into the extremes of poverty and wealth. The New England community was so strong and so supportive in comparison to that of the Chesapeake Bay, that it is no wonder they developed into two distinctly different cultures before the year 1700. The Chesapeake region developed into a land of plantations and money-driven owners, with the elite wealthy, almost no middle class, and those in poverty creating the population. New England, on the other hand, had developed into a religion and family based society comprised of mostly middle class families by 1700.
This paper is an assessment of the city of Reading, Pennsylvania. It will describe the city with a focus on the population, economic situation, culture, neighborhood and safety factors. It will also look at what the city has in place in case of a disaster. From this data, I will interpret the overall status of the community and formulate a logical community diagnosis.
Chicago has a history steeped in growth of infrastructure, devastating natural disasters, and everything in between. It first was settled in the late 1700’s and has been growing exponentially ever since. It’s a city of commerce and opportunity for many incoming immigrants and settlers to start a fresh life. This place became one of the most desirable cities in America to live and became the new home for many people from the south, including African Americans. Many European immigrants also tagged along with these black people coming from the southern states and made Chicago very culturally diverse over time.
We all have one. We are surrounded by it every day, almost all the time; however whether or not we think about it is a different story. It makes us who we are, the way we act; who we know is all affected by it. Community. Most people think of it as perhaps a town, or maybe a place within their town, like school or church. What these people fail to realize is that community has become so much more than a location; it consists of many other things, characteristics that help it be successful. These crucial aspects include family, morals, and common interests, just to name a few.

Every Community faces a variety of community health problems. The health of a community relies on four factors: physical, social and culture, community organization and individual behaviors. I believe my hometown struggles most with individual behavior, specifically poor and unhealthy lifestyle decisions. How individual community members behave reflects back onto the community as a whole. Unhealthy lifestyle decisions can have a lifetime affect on the individual as well as the community.
For the purpose of this paper, the community being analyzed will involve the population that lives within the boundaries of the Nutley, New Jersey. Nutley, a township within Essex County, New Jersey, is home to a dense population of individuals within its small borders. It meets the criteria of a community due to the fact that the individuals share some mutual characteristics (Kirst-Ashman, 2011). Nutley is a residential neighborhood that consists of 11,301 households. Nutley, New Jersey is also a geographical community, where individuals share the common variable of location (Kirst-Ashman, 2011). As a rescue worker, I am assigned to help clear the rubble and debris that was caused after the two 9/11 attacks. Before/after work or during my breaks I will often go to St Paul’s chapel which miraculously survived these attacks. St Paul’s chapel provides me and my fellow workers along with all other types of people with; food, comfort, a place to talk and a place to rest after a long day’s work. This has a substantial impact on me and my colleague’s daily life’s, as we can come to church every day and prepare for our days work at ground zero which a very tiresome job.
The innovation and modernization in Philadelphia is making major transitions and improvements to West Philadelphia. John Fry is making living communities that promote safety, cultivating the community and improving the economy. John Fry has been a symbol of prosperity and made neighborhoods to be “prim and prosperous-looking, and have become so kid-friendly,” contributing to making Philadelphia more recognizable and promotes young citizens to explore the magnificent city (John Fry). John Fry helps facilitate younger citizens who are moving into the city where it is
1). Initially, the town was built for the sole purpose of mills and mill-workers. Many multifamily comes were created to house families of mill-worker to ensure close proximity to the mills and a quick commute if there was a commute at all. A bike path was created and later easy access to public transportation was made available. In the 1980’s the mill industry had died down and the depopulation of about 16% (The City of Providence, 2016, p. 1). This had a devastating effect on the community of Olneyville. A huge percent of the jobs was no longer available and this effected the lives of many. In fact, many residents moved when to neighboring cities in pursue of a job. Those that stayed in Olneyville did the best with what they had which wasn’t much. Poverty stuck half of the population and the face of the community the homes, business and streets told a story of hardship. Today Olneyville is in the process of rebuilding their community, remodeling their homes and creating a pedestrian friendly neighborhood. This period of rebuilding has been many years in the making and while much has changed in Olneyville the history and the character is still the same. The Mill building are still standing strong as the day they were built but with a modern twist. The resilience of the community is everlasting, they pull together in times of need and make a negative situation a
Like a majority of state and local governments, the City of Morristown raises revenue through taxation, fees, grants, and issuing bonds for capital projects (City of Morristown, 2017; Hyman, 2014). Like a vast majority of the United States, the "Great Recession" impacted the budget of Morristown, primarily through a loss in the city's manufacturing base (City of Morristown, 2017). Thankfully, since the end of the "Great Recession" Morristown finds its economic situation improving, which can be viewed through an analysis of the city's budgets from 2015 to the present.
The town was a fort, it could hold against a battalion. From air raids, to shelling of artillery guns and overwhelming numbers of tanks combined with soldiers. It is not just an ordinary town, it was a town that was important to be taken by the enemy to show their might. The defenders know that if the enemy conquers the town, then the whole country will lose hope as it is their last standing town before the enemy gets close to their capital.
The community that I chose for my assessment paper is Park Hill Staten Island. The definition of community is a group of people living at the same place. I chose this community because I have live here for 10 years. Park Hill is in Clifton Staten island, which is in the North Shore of Staten Island. Park Hill is by the north-east side of Staten Island. Just walking a few blocks, you can see the water. The other side of the water is Brooklyn and you can see the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The size of Park Hill is 1.3 square miles, with a population of 20,000. In the 1817, most of the land property was own by the Vanderbilt family. In the 1900 the Fox Hills Golf Club used to be in Park Hill, but now it is Park Hill apartments. By the 1980s, it gains a nickname of
Living outside of Richmond city is a very diverse experience. I live in a small, rural area surrounding the city about 20 minutes away from the center of downtown. Directly in the city is a mix of wealth, poverty, race, and lifestyles. My closely surrounding area is mainly upper-middle class and very agricultural. However, there are pockets of poverty and more suburban areas. In Richmond city, there is a large number of international citizens, an innumerable amount of cultures are represented downtown. Along with this, there is a fairly large refugee population residing in Richmond now. As I have gotten older, I have noticed the lack of interest most families have in the city of Richmond when they live on the outskirts of
