Community College: Personal Statement Of Purpose

I believe that the mission of providing an excellent education for all students is one that is perfectly aligned with my past and future. Growing up I in a lower socioeconomic environment in Dallas, Texas I became the first person in my family to go and finish college. After obtaining my Bachelor in Psychology, I then became the first person in my family to go to graduate school. YES Prep believes that there is a transformative academic and social benefit for students when their teachers and leaders reflect a diversity of backgrounds and I believe that I can do just that. Working with YES Prep will help me help those who are like myself and more. I have always had a knack for helping others and this would be a great opportunity to continue

The significant academic challenge I have faced, is my learning disability. in all my life I have this challenge, and I can’t run from these struggles. The struggles are from reading to math, and from math going into memory issues that I have to struggle with all my life.

Before I started my first semester of college I made sure that my academic and career goals were set to avoid indecisiveness. One of my intellectual objectives has always been to be a part of the honors college. Deep in my heart I know I have what it takes to be in an organization of students that excel with integrity. Furthermore, the benefits that come along with being a student within the honors college can assist me with getting through my scholastic agenda which includes internships, scholarships and honorary mentions.

There are countless reasons why I have chosen Xavier University of Louisiana. Xavier will guide me to exceed all of my expectations with plenty of effort, focus, and determination. One of my main reasons for coming to Xavier is the wonderful biology pre-med program. I know that Xavier's dedicated faculty has helped many African Americans attain their goals of completing medical school. Whether a professor teaches an essential concept or an academic advisor assists with application processes, Xavier has all of the resources I will need to go to medical school. Going into Xavier, my expectations include becoming an ideal candidate for medical school to become a dermatologist or pediatrician. I plan to meet this expectation through rigorous

My most significant endeavor since attending community college has been has been protesting Capitol Hill at Washington, D.C. demanding congress to pass a clean Dream Act. As a member of the organization United We Dream, I went with them on a 16 hour long bus trip to the capital from Miami. Once we got to the capital, we went to a local church to practice how the protest was going to happen. At the church, I met many students like myself who all came to voice their demands to congress. During the lunch break, I met a student my age in the same grade. He noticed I was wearing a University of Southern California jacket and asked if I went there. I told him that I was a community college student at Miami Dade College planning on transferring there, that's when he told me he also attended a community college in Colorado and was planning to attend the same university.

Growing up in a small town, with the knowledge of a small town community can have an effect on you. Having the respect and dignity to know between right and wrong adds and interesting aspects into a life style. Growing up in a small community makes you realize what it is like to have small class rooms and having your teachers know you by a first name basis.Knowing everyone on each sport team because “everyone knows everyone in a small town”. I had the ability to be able to ride my bike down the street without a real question of my safety where I grew up in Worland Wyoming. I have different academic interests than others may, I enjoy different extracurricular activities than other students, and life experiences that are unlike anyone else that have shaped me into who I am today.

During my senior year in 2012, I decided to applied to universities however; my parents were not able to help me out financially. Since the Dream Act was not available until January 2013, I decided to attend a community college. I decided to enroll at Santa Monica College and then transfer to a university as a Physical Anthropology major. I took enough classes to be a full time student and still be able to help my parents around the house. My plan was to stay at Santa Monica College for 3 years and then apply for transfer; however, two of my most dear and closest family members became ill. My uncle, who has always believed that I could achieve great things in life, who gives the best advises in the world, and who taught me how to play the clarinet

Although my rejection to Morehead State University was no surprise, due to my previous college standings, I was highly disappointed. In hopes of a better outcome after sending my final transcripts for the spring term of 2017, I shortly received my news of rejection.

Ever since I was a kid I have always thought about what college I was eventually going to go to. I made the decision in high school that I wanted to be a special education teacher, so I thought about some schools that had that teaching program. My number one school I wanted to attend that had the best teaching program was East Carolina University. Having ECU as my number one choice lead me to apply there. Weeks after I applied I got a letter telling me some sad news that I was not accepted. Since I applied to ECU and did not get in, I was now thinking about applying to other schools like Methodist University or maybe a community college.

When I was a senior in high school I was accepted to Penn State and a few other schools, and was really pleased with how I had done at the end of my four years at my school, Council Rock North. But after a few weeks of investigating the potential costs and realizing that my savings would not be able to cover the costs of attending a 4 year school without putting my family and myself in a lot of debt, I realized that I could instead go to the local community college. I really liked this option because it allowed me to explore many of my passions for Computer Science without making a huge investment and locking myself into a certain path. There are many reasons I picked Hutchinson Community College to attend this semester. The first reason was for sports. During my senior year of high school, I thought to myself that I do not want to be lazy and do nothing at school. Therefore I decided to go back into cheerleading. One of the Hutchinson Community College cheer coaches showed interest in me. However, I was undecided on which college I wanted to go to until a cheer recruiter came to me. Which comes to my next reason why I picked Hutchinson for schooling. Hutchinson Community College was a good choice for me because of my major and a good education. How have you been? Its been a long time since I emailed you. How is work and everything going on?

For the past two years I have maintained a part time job as well as being a full-time student. I have been promoted within my job due to the dedication that I have displayed during the last few years. Due to my busy work and school schedule I have not had the opportunity to become a part of any extracurricular activities. However, I hope to become a part of volunteer services during my time at SF State particularly with children because I have a desire to help children and the community as well as gain experience for my future career as a teacher. Attending college is important to me because I believe it is the best way for me to help others and myself.

I am currently a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society, an international psychology honor society, and recently joined FIU’s chapter of the co-ed premedical fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon. These organizations allow me to participate in events and activities geared towards academic excellence and community service in science, values that I believe are fundamental not only to a career in medicine but to being a great student here at FIU. I was also given the opportunity to become involved with Peer-Led Team Learning, a program that works closely with the Biology department, where I served as a leader for several semesters and intend to continue to do so when my course load allows for it once again. In addition, I volunteer as a research assistant for the Child Narratives Lab in FIU’s Psychology department gaining hands-on experience with conducting studies and interacting with children in a research setting. Finally, I am a work-study in the Financial Aid department. As it stands, I am deeply involved with many different aspects of FIU and I only hope to do more in the future. My fraternity has offered opportunities for leadership that I hope to take advantage of such as positions in Student Government. I also have plans to apply for a role on the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution’s Student Conduct Committee to be more active in the campus

I have lived in San Antonio, Texas my entire life. Most of my family, from my mother’s side, still lives here, too. Only two of my cousins have ventured outside of Texas. Everyone else either lives in San Antonio or surrounding cities. One of my cousins, who still lives in Texas, is attending Texas State University in San Marcos. He and I are the only two males from my mother’s family who have been to college, so we are each proud of the other, and we know that our family is proud of us.
