Company X’s attitude towards being socially responsible is being clouded by its desire to maintain high profits. With its current actions, Company X is catering to a select group of its primary stakeholders such as the investors and shareholders. They seem to be forgetting that the customers, employees, and the community are also primary stakeholders. We will look into the scenario and dissect the company’s actions to show how they are alienating the community that will ultimately determine their reputation and profitability. Taking years to comply with repeated requests for healthy and organic options demonstrates a dismissive attitude towards one of the key aspects of their company “the customer”. Eventually, Company X complies with the customers repeated requests and provides healthier options. Unfortunately, the healthier products Company X provides are high margin products. Many of the high margin healthier products are unobtainable for most lower and middle class families. The limited amount of high priced healthy products may become a negative for Company X. It may appear to customers as ploy to increase the sales on processed foods which would be more profitable to the stores. After many years of customer requests, Company Q began selling a very limited amount of health-conscience and organic products. When local food banks asked for donations of day-old products, management declined due to worries over employee theft and fraud. If Company Q had looked at this request through the eyes of a socially responsible business, they could have donated the left over products to those in need, which in turn, would have given the perception that Company Q is concerned about the people in the neighborhood. When an organization partakes in “proactive behavior…for the benefit of society,” it is deemed as socially responsible (P. 155). However, prior to labeling a organization as socially responsible, it is important that we first identify what specific elements of proactive behavior constitute a socially responsible business. To begin, for an organization to be considered socially responsible on the highest level, it must take a proactive approach to doing business. This is defined as “[taking a] approach to social responsibility in which an organization goes beyond industry norms to solve and prevent problems” (P.155). In addition, it is standard for a socially responsible organization to incorporate a larger scope of stakeholders, to include external stakeholders, in their business decisions to create positive externalities, and mitigate negative ones, to benefit society as a whole.

In the scenario we are given the information that they closed two stores in “high-crime-rate” areas.” In high-crime-rate areas we can usually deduce through logical conclusion that people may not be as financially secure. Due to this they may not be able to afford the groceries that Company Q is offering. We can see that Company Q attempts to maximize only its profits when we read the scenario. In the scenario Company Q is very selective about its products and only offers it at “high-margins.” Anyone in these areas that they closed the two stores simply may not be able to afford the high markup costs that Company Q is trying to make.
