Unbeknownst to some individuals, the gaming industry has been growing in popularity as more people become introduced to technology and the social aspect of gaming has become more appealing to a variety of people. Since this TedTalk was performed 7 years ago, I can presume that the social stereotypes of what boy versus girl activities were not so intermixed and universal as it is today. With that being said, as a girl playing video games while also battling the work of university in 2017, I found myself disagreeing with many of the points Carr-Chellman was making, purely because it seemed very one-sided and she attempted to generalize a whole gender to display certain qualities and attributes. For example, she defined girls as dormant, rule-abiding, quiet learners who work well with the current inflexible education system whereas boys were the active learners who require more creativity with learning. To generalize and say that all boys play video games because they are disengaged from school without statistical evidence is unreliable and places a greater stigma behind video games being socially and mentally harmful to people who engage in their play.
