Sports is a language that is universal. Authors often write stories that are about sports because people can relate to them. They use sports to enhance the meaning of their content and make it more interesting to readers. “Sports Writing” is writing that just happens to be about sports. Sports Writing tells a story. In the articles, “The Gangster in the Huddle” by Paul Solotaroff with Ron Borges, and, “Mavericks” by Alice Gregory, the authors use sports to help them develop, and make an interesting story for their readers. Description is very important in any kind of writing. Both authors use sports to help them become descriptive and make the reader feel like they are actually part of the story. In the very first paragraph of Mavericks, Gregory gets very descriptive. She describes the faintly smell of saltwater, diesel fuel from probably surf vans and trucks and weed from the people driving those diesel vehicles (2013). Right off I get a sense of where she is and the people that she is most likely surrounded by. She also describes the humungous waves called …show more content…
Tone determines whether the reader will be interested or not. For example, if an article is overly scholarly than the reader might get bored. Or maybe that’s the kind of writing the reader likes. Gregory uses a personal and nostalgic tone. She recalls the times that she used to surf and work at the surf shop. She gets really personal when she talks about how she used to pee in her wetsuit because it was the easiest way to keep warm (2013). Her talking about surfing in this descriptive manner allows the readers to feel like they’ve surfed before even though many people reading the article probably never have. Solotaroff and Borges used an unsympathetic tone. They described in detail about the demise of Hernandez and at the end they call Hernandez a menace to society but, because he’s rich and well known the authors think he will catch another break
Sports are something that everyone in the world, regardless of age, sex, or nationality, can enjoy. Whether it's a child playing in his first t-ball game or a professional athlete swimming in the Olympics and everyone in between, sports can connect almost everyone. Fan support and overall devotion for athletic competition has raised professional athletes to superstars and national icons; Super Bowl Sunday is a national holiday to some, and sports are one of the largest moneymakers in the economy.
Tone is shown through emotions and words in Fahrenheit 451. There are a lot of emotions going on in the book with
Some people often have passion and power towards their subject, which has influenced our world over so many years. One person who could potentially inspire our world is Jeffery Goldberg, author of "The Case For More Gun(And More Gun Control)", published in 2012. In this essay, Jeffery displays a proper amount of charisma to persuade the reader that having a gun can be used as a tool of defense, which leads to an effective essay. Jeffery Goldberg's argument in "The Case For More Gun(And More Gun Control)" is effective because of his use of pathos and ethos in the overall article. These characteristics appeal to the reader, which in overall make it effective.
Every author has a different writing style in comparison. They convey their messages in multiple ways; using different tones to evoke certain moods on their readers. Some authors use a few different ways to catch their audiences attention; persuading them using logic, ethics and emotion.
Author Kris Vervaecke wrote an essay titled, "A Spectator's Notebook," for Writers in Sports. She talked about sports and how they affect different generations. Vervaecke supports her claim by showing how much she loves sports and by using her children as examples throughout the essay. Her son, Ben, represents strength, determination, and talent because of how successful he was in golf, and before he leaves for college he puts in Michael Jordan’s Air Time, that united Ben and Vervaecke. On the other hand, Vervaecke’s daughter, Emily, is a bench-warmer and was told she is only smart not athletic, so she was “benched” in the classroom. She then talks about her other son, Andrew, and describes him as the true athlete of the family because of how much people liked him. Vervaecke’s purpose is to show that sports are not just about something fun to do or watch, but can have a motivational impact that can affect someone's emotions, and she does this by developing an influential tone. Although Vervaecke mainly talks about her experiences and her childrens throughout the essay, her experiences apply to many students across the country. Many student-athletes are very successful in their futures because of what sports have taught them. Students should be involved in sports because student-athletes learn responsibility, how to manage their time, and take care of their psychological
3. Make sure you have picked the correct tone because any publication you want to write for or piece that you want to write will have its own tone and it would be best to try to match that same tone. Some pieces might call for unconventional and unexpected tones that challenge the status quo or instead a softer, optimistic, more informative tone. For example, an article about date rape for Seventeen Magazine and an article for Thrasher Magazine about skateboard trucks are going to have completely different tones. Check the tone you are going to us before you start writing, you don't want to get halfway and then realize that what you have written is all
Having your own style of writing is better than copying someone else’s way of writing. Writing in a specific format can be frustrating, such as essays because it’s uninteresting when writing the way a paper’s assigned repetitively. A book or paper differs when it comes to social media. Books can captivate the reader but social media fascinates a person who can stay on for hours. On websites, such as Facebook, arguments arouse in the comment section over a video or someone who post a status. Many people interact with each other with vulgar, joyful, and sorrowful comments. This is an example where tones can changes depending on a
A tone is the way the author conveys his or her unstated attitudes toward the story. The tone from the beginning to the end of Samuel is a serious tone. “Some boys are very tough. They’re afraid of nothing. The description Paley gives in the first two sentences makes you feel that the tone is going to be serious. Another example can be when the ladies in subway car become angry when they look at the boys. “Most of them brought their brows together and hoped the boys could see their disapproval”. They convey the serious tone through the way they feel through facial expressions. Thoughts of one of the women passenger’s shows a mothers concern when she attempts to confront the boys. “One of the ladies wanted to get up and say, be careful you dumb kids, get off the platform or I’ll call the cop.” The tone makes the situation serious tone even if it was thought and not an action. In another paragraph her action show the seriousness of the situation when thinks of her own child. “She stood up with determination and went to the door. Her action tells us that tone was not to be taken lightly and it was a serious matter.
There isn’t really a tone in the book. The author writes as if she was more informational. I think the book is actually a little bit suspenseful because when I read it I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next.
In literature, tone is often described as the attitude of the story. It is the method used by the author to add personality or emotion. Without tone, even the best-rounded characters can easily come across as flat. Tone is not simply style, diction, or setting, but instead is the tool that holds all of these pieces together. In, “The Lottery”, author Shirley Jackson’s use of tone not only leads the reader down a familiar easy path to follow, but also sets the stage for the climactic change in events that leaves the reader’s emotions spiraling out of control.
Tone is a literary device that is common in most works of writing. It is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. It is significant in that not only does it express the attitude of the author, but it also helps to quicken the pace of the plot. In the poem “Variations of the Word ‘“love”’,” Margaret Atwood wrote:
Faulkner, in his sports essay, describes the actions of hockey in order to convey the excitement derived from playing the sport. He successfully achieves this portrayal of action and excitement by his deliberate use of syntax and imagery.
In Jeffrey Schranks’ short story, “Sport and the American Dream”, he is trying to show us that the sport America watches and plays, portrays America’s character as a nation. Since America goes from baseball to football we it shows us that we are becoming more violent. his comparisons of sports and war is says best how America changes as a country over the years. Back when baseball was Americas’ pastime to being a totally football country. When we were a baseball country, Americans were happier, not many cared about wars or violence just the enjoyment they got from watching the games with friends or family at the ballpark. It didn’t matter that the sport wasn’t moving at a fast pace or so competitive. Football is the
One of the biggest complaints about interscholastic sports is the belief that sports take focus away from academics. Amanda Ripley, journalist and author, elaborates on this very issue. She provides many examples of the ways that sports play a negative role in American schools, and how she believes that they are the reason to blame for the shortcomings of American students: “Sports are embedded in American schools in a way
A major role in my life would definitely be sports. It is almost as if I look up to sports because I could not live without them. Sports pretty much define me as me. I love to play sports as well as watch all kinds of sports on T.V. and if I could ever go to a game and watch the players play live I would be thrilled. Basically sports define me because I am ambitious, I finish what I start, I set goals for myself, and I am a fierce competitor in which I love to win and I hate to lose. The greatest part about sports to me is living for the moment when the game is on the line and the pressure is on can you come through and make a play for your
