Comparing The Odyssey And The Cruelest Journey

A journey is a path of personal struggles that can ultimately lead to a great achievement, leaving the adventurer strongly affected by the experience. The impact of struggle on an adventurer can be clearly seen in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, and Kira Salak’s travel narrative The Cruelest Journey: 600 Miles to Timbuktu as the protagonists undertake journeys of their own, changing their outlook for future events. The Odyssey’s protagonist, Odysseus, finds himself wandering across many islands after the Battle of Troy, facing various foes for twenty long years, returning home to Ithaca, and having to save his wife and son from suitors. Similarly, Kira Salak, an explorer, writer, and protagonist of The Cruelest Journey must endure the harsh environment of West Africa as she prepares and attempts to travel down the Niger River in a kayak …show more content…

The drawbacks of these endeavors are overcome by the adventurers’ strive for perseverance, unchallenged intellect, and lasting patience.
Perseverance is the mental outlook that pushes Odysseus and Salak through their voyages, as they attempt to reach an end goal, even in the darkest of times, when all hope feels lost. Odysseus and his crew learn from the witch Circe that they must pass the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis as part of their journey back to Ithaca. On their way to the two monsters, Odysseus inspires hope into his crew with a speech, referring to their incident with a Cyclops, claiming, “More fearsome is it now than when the Cyclops had penned us in his cave?... Did I not keep my nerve and use my wits to find a way out for us?” (Homer 395). This motivational speech shows how Odysseus and his crew had to endure the wrath of the Cyclops and battle him, explaining how they pushed through this dangerous time, no matter what
