After analyzing both positions presented in the speech and the memorandum, it is clear that the speech by Keanu Williams is best supported because etextbooks are more expensive and technology does not cut down on learning time. Even though students are raised on technology, paper textbooks are better, and most children spend too much time on electronics and need a break from them. Initially, it might appear the etextbooks are less expensive, but in the long run, they are much more costly. According to Williams, schools will have to “invest thousands of dollars to ensure each student has a tablet computer. Then consider the expensive software costs and etextbook licensing fees.” Similarly, internet is required and a lot of student do
Education is discussed all the time to see what the best ways to learn are and what should happen to make education better. Tablets instead of textbooks have been a major discussion in the past, if tablets are chosen over textbooks it could be a huge step for the future. Some people are old fashioned and see the benefits in textbooks while others believe that the world is changing and that getting rid of textbooks and moving onto tablets would be a huge step toward success. This has been an ongoing discussion for years and probably years to come, some schools have made the step toward success they believe, and have made the change to having tablets help educate the students over textbooks. Tablets are a step in the right direction because, tablets help students learn faster, cost less, and tablets better prepare students for technology.
The speech I choose was an acceptance speech By Jesse Williams when he won the Humanitarian of the year award at the BET awards. Now this speech probably wouldn't be very appealing to a caucasian person because the main point of the speech is about how black people have been oppressed by white to long. It may sound like he’s targeting whites but he is just speaking up on all the injustices going on in our society to african americans. Also, a white person should not feel offended by the speech and feel as if Jesse Williams hates white people because he is half white. Jesse Williams see the world from multiple perspective being and black and white man. He uses his platform to as an actor to inform the country of our injustices against minorities.
Many schools have switched from using paper textbooks to iPads or chromebooks, which allow students to access online textbooks. But is this a good change? There are many factors that need to be put into consideration, including the age group of a kids receiving the technology, the classes this tool can be used for, and the children’s ability to interact with others.
Over the last decade technology has become increasingly integrated into school systems. As this happens school have to weigh many factors and make a choice about the level of technology to integrate. Factors such as cost, the values of these tools, and how children (and adults) are impacted by this bombardment of information all play a role as important factors in this progress. First of all, cost is referring to what us given up with the lack of traditional textbooks. A technology-focused environment risks giving up the benefits of physical sources.
Imagine a day when youngsters would leave for school carrying nothing more than an electronic device weighing less than one pound. The advent and growing popularity of electronic textbooks may make this a reality sooner rather than later. No more students trudging around with 20 pound backpacks strapped to their backs. No more lockers jammed with textbooks and notebooks. The benefits of transitioning to e-textbooks are many and provide advantages for both students and educators.
A teacher is standing at the front of any classroom in any school in America. She tells the class she wants the essay typed, and that they should use addition online sources in their paper. The bell rings and the students head to their next class. They will be watching an educational video on different kinds of chemical reactions. None of this would be possible without electronics. From the computer where the students will be tying their essay to the Promethean Board where they watched the video, technology is now a crucial part in teaching all across the U.S. The different kinds of media used to educate young people has expanded greatly through the use of electronics. “Shut Down Your Screen Week” is a movement attempting to deprive students of valuable technology in the futile hope that students will be less distracted. Although many people believe “Shut Down Your Screen Week” will be advantageous to students, Indian Ridge Middle School would benefit from not participating in the event.
With the rampant year over year releases and innovations in the consumer sector, computers and tablets are cheaper than ever. While one may argue that devices still remain more expensive than a simple notepad and pencil, students opting not to use a computer will accrue incrementally more costs for notebooks and/or paper, binders, the printing of class notes, and hard copy textbooks for each course. With PDF and online textbooks now available, at substantially lower costs, tech savvy students have additional cost and use advantages. Further, digital resources permit publishers to regularly update e-textbook forms. This is relevant for schools that utilize one text for multiple years and better ensures accuracy and currency. Beyond the economic benefits, computers have other practical advantages. They significantly reduce the amount of weight students carry in knapsacks, improve ergonomics, and ameliorate possible future absenteeism and medical costs due to back injury. Finally, reduced paper consumption and its footprint are more environmentally friendly and consistent with the University of Toronto’s sustainability
In "Blundering Into the Future: Hype or Hope," Jane Healy states that when it comes to learning, kids should not be allowed to rely on electronic devices. She believes that the electronic devices are quick fixes for a big problem. Healy acknowledges that politicians are trying to better the education of children, but she questions the main reason they're trying to upgrade into the system of electronics. She argues that even though politicians say that connecting to the internet will allow kids to engage and read more often, they contradict their statement by budget cutting libraries in the schools. Healy claims that electronic devices distracts children. Instead of the kids studying on their devices, they're going to be playing video games
Within the last five years, the school I attend purchased iPads for student use. One way we use them is to download textbooks. This is a wonderful system for many reasons. Physical textbooks should be replaced entirely by electronic versions on portable devices. Education is a very important part of every person's life. We begin learning just moments after we are born, and we do not stop learning until we die. Without knowledge, humans would not be humans, and our way of life would never
Even though the children are raised on technology, paper books are better. Our kids need a break from technology.
Schools all over the nation are looking to replace their textbooks with computers, but they are all wondering if it is a good idea. This has sparked controversy throughout the states because some schools want to take the plunge, however others are not so eager to let go of old teaching methods, maybe because they would have to rewrite their entire curriculum, which could take months to completely take over the old one. Yet still the sources say that because the amount of positive aspects of technology in schools outweighs the negative ones, new technology should be employed in an educational setting.
Also, they will need to get Wi-Fi. Without that, no one can access their textbook or online work during school. And yes, students won’t have to deal with the weight of the textbooks anymore, but now they have to worry about finding certain cases or backpacks to carry their new tablet or notebook computer in. Not all backpacks are suitable to keep the laptop safe from harm. These harms can include theft, damage to tablet and many more. Theft is one of the biggest concerns. At the Miramar High School, they wanted to integrate technology into the curriculum for a project. (Gewertz). They issued out Apple iBooks to all of their students. 16 laptops were stolen; 10 by robbers, some armed with weapons, when the students were walking to and from school and 6 from inside the school when left unattended (Gewertz). With the massive storage of the tablets, it can be somewhat of a problem. Yes there will be a ton of storage but the student will feel tempted to download apps, games, and music onto the tablets.
Electronic textbooks are more portable and convenient as they can be accessed by a tablet, downloaded onto a computer or accessed via the internet. The technological benefits available on an electronic textbook are endless. The audio and video capabilities will liven up learning and change the way students understand and retain the material. The emergence of three-dimensional technology may also play a role in the near future. In addition, digital textbooks are much more user friendly. Studying for tests will be more efficient as highlighted notes can be easily transferred into electronic note cards for memorization. The main downside to electronic textbooks is that students will have to purchase a reading device, tablet, laptop or smartphone in order to view digital textbooks away from home or on the go. Most college students have already made this investment prior to starting college.
Technology improvements and rising education costs alone justify eliminating text books both economical and environmental friendly. Would providing students an electronic reader ultimately save school districts money
To start off, schools need to realize the amount they can save in the long run by utilizing technology and lean away from traditional, old fashioned, hard cover books. When books become outdated and used, schools have to spend endless amounts to replace them. To avoid this, schools can take the initiate and work proactively and replace hard cover books with electronics to avoid unnecessary expenses. An example of this occurred at Empire High School which recently made a switch from textbooks even though, “it wasn’t because of a funding crisis.” (Source A) Empire High School shows just how well technology can work. Not only does technology help in saving necessary funding, it adds a sure convenience factor to the students and teachers by not having to drag around large and expensive textbooks.
