The hotel industry is a labor-intensive service industry dependent on the availability of high-quality employees to deliver, operate and manage tourism for its survival and competitive advantage (Amoah & Baum, 1997). The tourism industry is one of the most essential area in coming years. It has the opportunity for a rapid growth. The needs of the hotels are also increasing and it has the potential to provide employment to many people around the world. It is also observed and researched the there is a need of qualified and educated staff. They should be more skill full and aware of new trends and demands of the industry. One of the more important skills students will learn outside the classroom is teamwork. This quality can not be taught it must be learned by experience. Members will be on teams to compete in competitions. Students must learn the limits and strengths of their team member if they wish to succeed. This skill prepares students for the team work assignments which will be required in classes, as well as in everyday
Reflecting on experience is an important capability for an individual to be able to move forward. As (SOURCE) said, “(CONTEXT”). Moreover, individuals ought to be able to work not only individually, but also to work together in a group. Working with other people, especially whom you have not known is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is quite difficult to develop an effective team. Through this reflection essay on the group presentation that I did last Monday, I have become more aware of useful strategies to deal with issues and understand what could be improved for future presentations. Developing teamwork skills is am important benefit for me as future professional workers.
In this section I will explain the different development in the tourism industry since the 1960’s and what the effect it has on the travel industry.
"Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." This quote was from Andrew Carnegie. I wondered why an American industrialists quote could add onto my story. But once I finished expanding this paper I realized that this paper has everything to do with those very words.
Coming into this class I was a bit wary about how this class would run and what we would learn, especially once I found it was to be team led. In the past twelve weeks I have gained more insight on myself and how I react to situations in group settings, especially being in a class that is described as management and not psychology. Within this essay, I will look do describe my experiences and thoughts with my team as well as how we progressed. I will also look to describe how my class has progressed from the early stages and has transformed into a well-oiled high performing team. One of the tools I will use to show and describe the development of both my team and the class will be Wheelan’s four stages of development.
The course, examines the economical, social, political, and environmental aspects of Tourism. Students develop specialised business skills and they will have the chance to focus their studies on administrating tourism businesses, transportation, and the framework where the businesses operate (legal, political and human resources framework).
The process of working with a team has helped to shape my character and has influenced the way I approach social situations. Through experiencing groups that have worked together with varying levels of success I have acquired numerous positive attributes. The first being patience. Patience with the other people in the group, patience with oneself, and patience for the group to begin to work functionally. Most things are not discovered, created, or perfected at first glance or attempt so one must learn to be capable of waiting. Furthermore, I enhanced my communication skills. I was a reserved child, but through being placed in situations where teamwork was present I was provided with the tools necessary to fluently and efficiently communicate. Finally, I learned to have confidence in myself. Teamwork revealed to me the power all individuals hold within them and that other people are understanding. I will forever be grateful to the marvelous individuals that composed the teams and groups that exposed me to teamwork because they taught me valuable life
After reading The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Pat Lencioni, discussing the function of effective teams in class, and completing various team building exercises, I have developed a much better understanding of the importance of a proper team in a business setting and how good team work can produce more efficient and productive results.
Theory and models of teamwork will be used to discuss all aspects of this team including team roles, communication, conflict and decision-making. Conclusions will then be drawn as to how the team could have been more effective in their completion of the task.
Groups and teamwork are an essential aspect of everyday life. It is suggested that “groups have the potential to outperform individuals” (Mottola & Utkus, 2009). There are several facets that impact teamwork, including communication, and cooperation. Conflicts and challenges are also important aspects that can occur in teamwork. It is imperative to understand effective models, and actions that can be taken to establish successful work. Experiential learning will be used to analyze a group experience that the author found to be meaningful. Additionally, team dynamic concepts and theories will aid in analyzing the experience.
Globally the tourism and hospitality industry is undergoing and evolving the radical changes. From the past experiences are now advancing at greater pace through faster development of skills and knowledge developed to create and adapt innovation in several ways. Therefore, it is important to have greater understanding of current issues and knowledge in order to cope with future challenges effectively.
Teamwork can be complex and challenging given task and interpersonal issues, level of group motivation and expected performance standards. The concrete experience spoken about in this reflection piece is in reference to the effectiveness of myself as a group member and the group, working to write a report outlining the organisation and structure of Volkswagen. Dennison (2009) applies Kolb’s learning cycle (1981, 1984) which suggests that learning moves through a continuous cycle, between having an experience, and then reflecting on that action. This cycle has been developed from Lewin’s (1951) model for experiential learning. Reflection termed by Boud, Keogh and Walker (1985) ‘is a forum of response to the learner to experience’(p. 18). On reflection, the early set group dynamics was a defining factor in the experience, and how the team conducted themselves throughout the task. Meyerson, Wick and Kramer (1996) note that ‘such rapidly converging groups require methods for developing “swift trust”’ (p. 8), which can explain why initial group dynamics are so important. I took on multiple team roles, including group leader, which could be translated into the team not performing collectively on a high level, however, I could view this as a personal ineffectiveness of my leadership style.
