Good Essays

Coronary artery disease (CAD), also known as heart disease, is defined as the “narrowing or blockage of the arteries and vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to the heart” (Milto, Odle, p.1). The main cause of CAD is an accumulation of fatty materials on the lining of arteries. Once the fatty materials line the inner arteries, it restricts blood flow to the heart. When blood is can no longer long flow to the heart, it causes a heart attack. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in both women and men in the United States. The main reason why African Americans are more likely to develop CAD because their ancestors were salt-sensitive meaning that their bodies retain more sodium. Their descendants still carry this gene. The next minority group is Hispanics. The Harvard Medical article states “Hispanic and Latinos have higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and other cardiovascular risk factors compared to whites”; however, they are less likely die from heart disease (Harvard University). The last group is Asian. South Asian tend to have higher rates of coronary artery disease, while east Asians have lower rates. The article state the children of the Asian Americans have a higher risk of developing CAD because they often adopt Western cultural practices (Harvard University). In the article “Effects of a Transtheoretical Model-based Exercise Stage-Matched Intervention on Exercise Behavior and Quality of Life in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease”, the researchers used a randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of a TTM-based exercise stage-matched intervention (ESMI) on exercise behavior and poor quality of life (QoL) among sedentary patients with coronary heart disease. There was a total of 196 patients that were included and randomly assigned to the control group, sham group or the experimental group. Instead of having one exposure, this study had two which were the transtheroretical model-based exercise and the quality of life of the patients. The outcome of
