Running Head: ARE CORRECTIONAL POLICIES AND PROGRAMS WORKING TODAY Michelle Elsenbary Intro to Corrections North Carolina Central University The subject of this article is to review the past and present changes within correctional policies and programs and the influence it has on criminal activity. Throughout the article, several researches involving systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and the Maryland method scores show the positive and negative result of certain policies and programs. These programs include: academic and vocational education; cognitive skills programs. Also, deterrence, incapacitation and increased control do not reduce the future criminal activities of offenders and delinquents. Individual-level change in thinking and information processing has been shown to be effective. Another research was performed by Sampson and Laub (1993) and Laub and Sampson (2003). This study proved that boys who were associated with stronger adult social bonds like good jobs or educational activities were less inclined to be involved with criminal activities. Throughout the article, MacKenzie found that a new correctional model must take place in order for offenders to actually be helped and not harmed. There are many issues that are hurting these individuals. Identifying the right treatment methods is so important to properly rehabilitate these individuals. MacKenzie stated that "effective treatment programs address cognitions and the way that these individuals think and process information influence whether they violate the law (Andrews and Bonta 2006; MacKenzie 2006). As a result of these findings, it was concluded that a new correctional model is needed in order for the system to be better towards the offenders that they are responsible for.
