They knew of the existence of lands across the Atlantic and they had made several expeditions to the West before Columbus discovered the Antilles in 1492, but they had kept the knowledge to themselves in order to forestall the ambitions of Spain, England, and France. For a small nation, secrecy was the only available method of safeguarding the rewards of bold and successful exploration against exploitation by more powerful maritime rivals.
Culture is a beautiful thing. What culture means to me is that we are all different in many ways. I believe that culture changes from person to person and place to place. Someone with the same ethnicity could have a different culture depending on where they live in the United States. Someone in the same city could have a different culture than you and that what makes this world beautiful. We are all different but yet accepting and respectful of someone else’s culture, for the most part.
Merriam-Webster states “culture is defined: as the beliefs, customs, and arts, of a particular society, group, place, or time.” People think of culture as they think of a specific person(s) or a region but with a little studying of culture they would understand what it really is.

As defined by Dictionary.com, the term culture states, “the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.” In my perspective there are many connotations for the term culture. What does culture mean to you? Specifically, there are ways our own culture is being expressed in today's society, and you yourself play a part in it. Based on a certain group of people known as African-Americans, there are multiple ways not only their culture, but cultural identity is expressed. Culture can be expressed in many things such as in (music, advertisements, body art, tattoos, embellishment, propaganda, interpersonal, food, books, and in much more different contexts.)
As I have mentioned in previously assignements, questions like this are always tricky to answer to me, especially when involves family and country culture, since I feel like I have to describe then and now, I guess I could call it bicultural. Let me break it down into how it 's generally expected and then how I actually emphasize it to myself:
What is the meaning of culture? What makes up one’s culture? How does a person’s surrounding affect their culture? Culture as we know it is all our surroundings that shape who we are as individuals and societies. Culture is learned, shared, transmitted across generations, it takes time to develop, and it is subject to change. When we are born, we are not immediately aware of our culture, it must be learned. The way we learn our culture is through shared knowledge and experiences that are often passed down from generation to generation. These aspects of our cultures are fostered over long periods of time and are influenced by not only the people around us but also the geographical location, however culture is always subject to change due to the human nature and the ever-changing society we live in.
The term culture itself, is very broad. It is defined in many different ways by many different people around the world. Culture includes all the aspects from your everyday life. Most people don’t know it, but everything you do is part of your culture; it is a tradition. Culture consists of things such as clothes, family, food, and religion, all the way to recreation, gender roles, music, and art. However, when you enter a new type of environment with your own cultural heritage, it forces you to adapt and change. With this, a person’s culture consistently informs the way we view the world and others. This is especially true when people’s cultural traditions are confronted with a new culture and environment.

Pervasive: it touches every aspect of life. Idealistic: it embodies the ideas and norms of a group. Variable: it varies from society to society, group to group. These are just some of the many characteristics of culture.
