Dandy-Walker syndrome is a condition that is present at birth (congenital). Dandy-Walker syndrome is when the brain is not formed correctly. This affects the part of your brain that controls movement (cerebellum). The brain forms so that there:
• Is an enlargement of a small channel that allows fluid to flow through the upper and lower areas of the brain and spinal cord (fourth ventricle).
• Is a partial or complete absence of the cerebellum.
• Are fluid-filled spaces around the cerebellum.
Dandy-Walker syndrome can range from mild to severe.

CAUSES
It is not known what causes Dandy-Walker syndrome.

RISK FACTORS
Risk factors include:
• Being female.
• Having a family history of Dandy-Walker syndrome.
