The Long Way Home was written by David Laskin, an author who attended Harvard and earned a bachelors in history and literature. He later studied at Oxford where he obtained a masters in English. Laskin was an editor for Bantam Books, a publishing company. After editing for some time, he decided to become his own freelance writer, publishing many books later on. In The Long Way Home, Laskin covers the lives and struggles of twelve immigrants that left what they had behind for a better life in America to excel in the war efforts . Laskin suggests that through their hard times, they are the more willing, and diligent to fight for their families, and for their new mother country. Ottaviano was reliable, sturdy, and hard working at only seventeen when he, his widowed mother, and five other siblings sold their belongings and sailed to America. Being the head of the house, he was used to the hard labor that came with taking care of his family, " Tommaso had the air of someone who could be counted on... " ( D. Laskin, p. 57, The Long Way Home, 2011). Ottaviano quickly found a job as a machine operator, quickly growing up to the daily demands that came with being the provider for his family in a forein world. After five laborious years in America, Ottaviano was only twenty one when he signed his name on a registration card. Although, being the only support of his mother, he was able to have an exemption for his service. Whether his will or patriotism, he " ... insisted on waiving his exemption and serving his adoptive country " ( D. Laskin, p. 163, The Long Way Home, 2011).
