Defining concepts from a nursing perspective is important to expand nursing knowledge. When we, as a profession, borrow words/terms from other medical disciplines we are subjecting ourselves to definitions based on those disciplines underpinnings and knowledge bases (Bonis, 2013). We do ourselves an injustice using these borrowed terms. In order to convey our contributions to the healthcare field, we must analyze and define concepts as they relate to the nursing profession (Bonis, 2013). The phrase health coaching is one that is used by many disciplines in healthcare. Over the last 15 years, health coaching has become well known, with peak reference of the term noted over the last 6-8 years. How does this peak impact the nursing profession? Nurses rank amongst the most common deliverers of health coaching along with measuring its success (Olsen, 2013). When the phrase health coaching is used, does the same definition come to everyone’s mind? Being cited as the profession who implements health coaching very often, it is necessary for us to define the term. Jeanette M. Olsen’s purpose for conducting a concept analysis on health coaching was to breakdown and study the term, shed light on it, and give the term health coaching a functioning definition as it relates to the profession of nursing.
