Through life, people experience many kinds of love. Many people often believe they love someone, when they actually do not because they may not know what the word means. As much as we want to understand love, it is still simply indescribable. As C.S. Lewis tries to explain it in his book, The Four Loves, it is still a mystery as to what love truly means. Love does not have one fixed definition. The definition of romantic love differs from person to person. People fall in love on the bases of the environment they grew up and values they have learned as a child. People often look for a person that they can trust which might be due to having similar values. Probably, this is part of the human nature because if a couple has similar values, they might have a higher probability of staying together longer and they can have a healthier relationship with less arguments and personal conflicts. More, people with similar personalities can stay together longer to raise their children and create a happy family life. Having a happy family is good for a person’s health too, because it is a kind of natural and emotional support. Helen Fisher argues in her lecture, “Why We Love, Why We Cheat”, that love, lust and attachment are controlled from different parts of the brain. These parts of the brain can work separately from each other. She mentions love is needed for survival and being happy. She also states marriages are more equal today because women are gaining more rights. In her other lecture, “Brain in Love”, Fisher explains which brain regions are involved when a person is deeply in love with somebody.

Love cannot be defined in one sentence or even a paragraph. Every human has his or her own definition of love because people usually define love based on their cultures, backgrounds, social classes, educations, and their societies. In this essay, the main point will be the different kinds of love that Carver illustrates in his story “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love.” In Carver’s story, there are some points that I can relate to my personal experience. One word thrown around is Love. People use it for everything, whether you are describing your love for pancakes or your significant other, love is a noun used by all. Despite how common this word is, almost everyone has their own specific definition. People apply personal meaning to love, meaning that they attach it to a person or an idea that they themselves come up with, but if you think that stopped people from defining love you are dead wrong. In total, there are nine different definitions of love and that is just on one site. I do not find this surprising at all, since the beginning of time love has been present and I will go on a quest to try and define as many definitions that I can get my hands on, starting with the origin of “love”

Shakespeare explores different types of love such as family love, romantic love, love at first sight, friendship love and forced love. The dictionary defines love as having an intense feeling of deep affection for someone. Love has many examples like Romeo’s affection of early love for Rosaline, a “puppy” love or the otherworldly love, the generosity that common between Juliet with the nurse or Romeo with Mercutio as friends. This story predominantly concentrates on the youthful, romantic, passionately love, particularly between two young lovers named Romeo and Juliet.

An author by the name of Marian Vere once said “Love is a word that is overused these days, due to other lesser feelings often being mistaken for it. Infatuation, admiration, and attraction can pose as love, and can sometimes overwhelm us and fool us into thinking that we have found the real thing when we haven't. Those other feelings may be pleasant for a time, but they are not real love. Real love is rare. It's something that, quite honestly, I believe very few people ever truly experience.” Love is a word that I don't use very often, I believe that it is very ignorant for teenagers who have no experience in life to use the word “love” so carefree. For me, Graceson Williams to tell you, “I love you,” means I must have a strong feeling for you.

I never understood what people meant when they’d say “there’s a fine line between love and hate”. I was taught love was “good” and hate was “bad”. Someone even tried to convince me that hate doesn’t exist. But just like “good” and “bad”, one cannot exist without the other. I have asked myself countless times how two words, or better yet feelings, that are supposed to be antonyms, opposites, are so similar.

(HOOK) What is love? Everyone in this world thinks that love is all about expensive things such as clothes, electronics, and definitely money. This writer personally thinks that love is all about family, friends, siblings, and of course our God. (CI) This essay is about how love can be positive and negative in each and everybody’s lives. (GS1) One thing that this writer personally loves is the love of siblings. (GS2) The second thing that this writer loves is the love of friends. (GS3) The last thing that this writer loves is the love of parents. (THESIS) Overall, this writer loves many things, but this writer has (I) the love of siblings, (II) the love of friends, and (III) the love of parents.

We can feel it but cannot see it, we know what it is but cannot explain it. Love is defined by the dictionary as:

Love, since the beginning of time, has had a place in every literature no matter the time period. The world that we live in is complex and often times, love and reason do not exist interconnect, however, literature acts as the glue in bringing these two elements together. Authors sometimes use the concept of love as a subject for their work, rationally, and carefully using it as a tool in their writing. In this essay, works by different authors during the Romantic, Realist, and Modernist period will be used to exhibit some of the forms of love used in literature.

A mother’s love can be everything, but selfish is one thing it cannot be. I Love itself cannot be described or put into words; it doesn’t matter from what perception you are looking from love is unexplainable. As humans we try to explain love the best way we possibly can. If I was ask today or tomorrow “What is love?” I would smile and say sacrifice, love is sacrifice, love is when you are down to your last dollar, but you have to make a way to see your family well care for, my mom is love. It does not matter what age a female becomes a mother or if she is a single mother or not a single mom as a mother she will have to sacrifice a lot for her kid(s) well-being and so that her kids can live a happy and comfortable life; love is sacrifice and no one can love you love your mother. My mom and other mothers I have observed over the years I have lived had to make sacrifices for their babies: time, personal life, and state of mind.

Love between friends is finding out that your grandmother has had a heart attack and the only person you want to talk to is your best friend. The most magnificent thing about having love in your relationship is trusting one person with all your darkest secrets. Having love in a friendship is that warm feeling you get in your heart whenever you’re around that certain person. When you see that person, your day automatically becomes better. As time goes by, the love and trust between you and your friend will grow deeper. Having love in a friendship is when you’re stressed out at school and your best friend sacrifices her time to help you understand a topic. Love between friends is something that does not come often because it is so pure and original that not many can hold on to it.

What is “Love”? Love can be defined as different things. Love can be the love between brother and sister, sibling love, like Ender and Val. Love can also be the love between a boyfriend and girlfriend or a husband and wife, like Val and her husband, which the book doesn’t really talk much about, or Novinha and Libo. In strange cases, the love you should have for a girlfriend or wife but you feel that way for your sister, like Miro and Ouanda. Love is one of the weirdest feeling ever and is something all of the books characters face, maybe not in the same way but it will have an impact on their lives one way or another.

Friendship is another kind of love in which your “lovers” are your true friends. True friends are the ones who always appreciate and truly love the person you are. Their love for you is not superficial, yet unshakable and deep-felt over time. They treat you like a member of their family and see you perfectly despite your imperfection. As Lord Byron states “Friendship is love without his wings”, your boyfriend/girlfriend may “fly away” at some point of time, but a true friend will always be by your side and comfort you whenever you have troubles. That is how love works in a friendship. The different forms of love are often used by authors as a catalyst for positive character development.
