Who would have thought that a sudden mandatory security lockdown at my summer internship at the Depositary Trust & Clearing Corporation would be the answer to all of my career questions. Growing up with four older sisters who are all extremely successful and happy in their chosen careers, I was eager to start finding my niche and my purpose. I had a thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world outside of my little town in Staten Island. This eagerness helped me land my first real-world learning experience. I was thirteen years taking classes at a performing arts school in New York City and the manager of the school asked if I would like to shadow and assist the marketing manager of the school to gain an understanding of the Marketing industry. This opened my eyes to a different field and I was eager and ready to learn more. For weeks I applied online to several different companies seeking internships. I was surprised to receive an interview request from Downtown Magazine. I was shaking and petrified as I made my way to the offices of Downtown Magazine but the CEO loved me and offered me the position immediately after my interview. To her surprise, when she asked …show more content…
Each internship opportunity provided a different learning experience and helped expose me to a contrasting career option. My goal was to experience the calming yet thrilling feeling that my sisters described when they went to work everyday. On the third day of my sixth internship, my manager at the Depositary Trust & Clearing Corporation informed me that the building was on mandatory lockdown due to a breach in their settlement system and we could not leave until the issue was resolved. I sat at work for over fifteen hours listening to our team work together to solve this issue and as my boss explained the circumstances, that was occurring I realized that I was experiencing that calming yet thrilling feeling that I’ve been searching
My experience as an intern at 3M consisted of carrying out laboratory research to ensure the safety and durability of the large-scale manufacturing medicine filter, Zeta Plus™. This experience advanced my ability to collaborate, think ahead, apply what I have learned in Chemistry and Mathematics, and increase my expertise in computer software. My current position in Community Relations at Travelers entails for me to communicate with and manage volunteer opportunities for over 3,000 employees, in addition to connecting Travelers with non-profit partners, event planning, and serving as a liaison in Saint Paul for my remote manager and team in Hartford, Connecticut. This position enables me to not only exercise and expand my communication and technical skills, but also allows for me to learn about myself. And lastly, as a Resident Advisor at the University of Minnesota, I have been able to serve as an academic, social, and personal resource for forty first-year students. As an RA, communication and time management have been at the heart of my success. As a junior studying Marketing and Computer Science, my interests lie within the space of sales marketing, technology and international business, and I strongly believe that Morgan Stanley will allow for me to expand my knowledge in these areas. I sincerely hope to continue this learning process as an intern this coming
My internship experience proved to be valuable in terms of exposure and knowledge. Attending the M-1 Rail Community Advisory Council meetings were very rewarding. I was able to observe and interact with the public on their thoughts about M-1 Rail. The internship has taught me that it is important to learn how to demonstrate professionalism but courteous behavior at all times. My internship has definitely given me a better understanding of my skill, but most importantly, I’ve come to learn that I am not alone. This job has taught me that almost everybody is in my same position. Thanks to my I know that if I continue to work hard things will fall into place. Being my first position in an office atmosphere, I didn’t know exactly what to expect.
The situation that brought me from my first internship to the second one was frustrating and difficult. Nonetheless, it provided me with beneficial learning experiences for my career and life in general. One of the silver linings of interning at these two considerably different internship experiences was increasing my knowledge of two different types of business. The first of these areas was in the Non-Profit organization at PACS, where their mission is to empower individuals who are struggling. The nonprofit industry has always deeply interested me, and what I learned at PACS only fueled that interest. The time I spent at PACS was brief and ended abruptly. Nonetheless, I learned valuable and significant information and gained an understanding of the various business characteristics that are essential in nonprofit organizations.
I will never forget the people I was able to get to know and build a relationship with. I will never forget the sight of my first surgery, the precision from skin to scalpel. I will never forget the pregnant trauma victim, whose eyes and expressions left a forever impact on me. Every moment within the career internship came to build an everlasting memory. I was capable of seeing and participating things I would have never seen without.
As I approach graduation, like many before me, I wondered what I was going to do with the rest of my life, with the hope of finding a career path that I would love. For me, I always have thought about furthering my education by going to law school or getting into politics. As I grappled with the decision of what would by my next step, I started to look for jobs in line with my qualifications and interests. My sister sent me the link to this internship, telling me to apply and saying that she knew the job is something that interests me. The moment I opened the link I was filled with excitement. This was the opportunity I was looking for! I am interested in this internship because it is an exciting opportunity to experience the operations of
Over this past year, a single most outstanding accomplishment that has been a seemingly constant source of pride for me above all else. The summer right before my senior year I took part in Miami Dade’s paid internship program. During that school year, my Information Technology teacher personally told me about the internship program and highly recommended that I go through with it. Eventually, time passed and there was a presentation about the internship and as soon as the presentation ended, I made sure to do all in my power to take part in it. At first, I will admit, I was not entirely sure what to expect from this experience; this was an entirely new experience for me. Despite this, one thing I did know that this internship experience would ultimately benefit me more than anything I have ever accomplished.
Through this internship, I have learned more about myself and what I enjoy doing. For example, I learned that I actually enjoy participating in different aspects of research such as scoring data analyzing how the data applies to clinical settings and real world matters. This came as a slight surprise to me, as I thought I would get bored with my tasks early on and regret choosing the internship site that I did. However, I could see myself writing up grants and conducting research for an organization as a possible future career path. I have even decided to extend my internship by continuing to volunteer throughout next semester as well. Another surprise came in the form of
As a recent college graduate from Francis Marion University, I believe am highly qualified for the current career vacancy. Although, I have the absence of abundant experience required in the field experience of the career vacancy; I have a professional personality and the learning capabilities to excel within the career position. In the recent years to past, I have represented the MTV Networks at the age of 16 in London, England, demonstrating the ability to strategically analyze problems, plan and organize work, work on an international work environment, and leadership skills. I have received promotions throughout my work history for exceeding the expectations of customer service skills and duties. Through the years I have completed numerous
What was missing or disappointing, if anything, about this internship? What was especially rewarding and educational?
When I first came to this school I had been trying to get a job for a year and I could not go through with the process. The idea of becoming an adult and having a job frightened me. I knew that when I decided to come here, that I would have to take part in an internship. I forced myself into something that was not comfortable for me, so
Throughout my tenure at the Undergraduate level, it became very clear that I wanted to stay within the Financial Sector post-graduation. Finding that ideal role that I could leverage with my degree, was quite a whirlwind to say the least. However after landing an internship with Well Fargo in the Residential Mortgage right after graduation was ideal in 2011.
This morning you stopped outside the library to talk with Patricia Norman, a senior who is majoring in marketing. She told you with a mixture of excitement and anxiety that she has finally decided to join the many other seniors who are busily looking for a job. She's even drafted a résumé and begun writing letters to employers listed in a publication she picked up at the Career Services Center.
---Michelle Minter says, “ When I graduated, I thought I was going to get this first- class job and be a successful marketing person. But those opportunities come with experience. I just thought I'd be automatically handed this great opportunity, but it wasn’t the case” (133).
Although, I have to say candidly that I don’t feel that I accomplished or learned as much in the end as I had aspired to during the onset of each internship.
As I reflect on my internship thus far I have realized that my values of living have changed. People always say “tomorrow is never promised,” I have now seen this first hand. Most of our cases involving young people are either homicides or overdoses, which are both never foreseen by the decedent. I now live everyday to its fullest. I also have a new value for family. I have also
