I have spent the last few weeks continuing my education on how the coroners’ office completes their investigation. Last Friday I was able to complete my first solo investigation. We had two runs at Methodist Hospital, Deputy Kendall made sure I knew exactly what information I had to obtain and then had me navigate the hospital on my own and complete the investigation. Hospital investigations are usually pretty simple because most of the time we already know how the person died, normally it has something to do with their prior medical history, and then we can do a scene sign out. A scene sign out is when the coroners’ office is going to sign the death certificate, but there is no need to complete and autopsy so we allow the patient to go straight to the funeral home. My specific case was a gentleman who had a witnessed fall at work. I was able to speak with the family and the nurse. Speaking with the family, in my opinion, can be the most meaningful part of the investigation. This is the time when you can try to give the family as much closer as possible until we have more information for them. As I reflect on my internship thus far I have realized that my values of living have changed. People always say “tomorrow is never promised,” I have now seen this first hand. Most of our cases involving young people are either homicides or overdoses, which are both never foreseen by the decedent. I now live everyday to its fullest. I also have a new value for family. I have also
The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don't feel obligated to do so. (The application won't accept a response shorter than 250 words.)
NCSSM Residential and Online students must have a high level of maturity, whether living away from home or working daily without teachers or supervision. Please help us understand why you are mature enough to manage your own deadlines, schedule and academic interest.
While I have faced a multitude of challenges, one of the most impactful ones by far has been my experience with physics. Though I had already taken a physics course at my former high school and performed well, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) requires at least two additional trimesters of physics to graduate. So, in the fall of 2015, I began taking my new physics course. While physics in general may be a challenging subject to many, the physics courses taught at NCSSM are often on the more extreme end of the difficulty scale. Because of this, I was consistently on the verge of failing throughout the majority of my first trimester in physics, and I was hovering just above a failing grade of D when midterm reports were released. After holding multiple conversations with various school faculty, including my academic advisor, counselor and physics teacher, I began to understand the consequences of receiving a
Growing up I became accustomed to being in academic environments that were heavily populated by minorities. Due to this I was constantly surrounded by people who shared similar backgrounds and experiences as me. When I began my studies at the University of Maryland it was a completely different atmosphere. Coming into an environment where I was no longer surrounded by minorities made me feel out of place. Often times I would ask myself if this was the right place for me, but then I would remind myself that my hard work and dedication got me there. Still, I would have my doubts. During my second semester (Spring 2017) I met a couple of girls on campus who were members of SIA. As I began to talk to them more I quickly noticed their strong work ethic and all of their achievements. Meeting them helped me stop feeling out of place at school as I was able to meet more people with similar ethnic backgrounds as me. I admired their interest in creating a community of Latina empowerment. This is one of the reasons I became interested in joining SIA. Being in a place where the issues minorities face are often ignored makes it even more important to have organizations that focus on giving people the support system much needed in college. Another reason I became interested in SIA was through their events on campus. Members are constantly organizing events on many topic such as domestic violence and environmental racism. These events were interesting to me because they were on topics that aren’t often talked about. For example, when I saw flyers about their environmental racism event I became interested in doing my own research on these topics. Events like these are important because they help educate people on topics that are often overlooked. This made me excited to join SIA and be able to contribute to this.
As I started to improve, I felt that imagery and increase arousal was having a large positive impact on my performance. Therefore, it led me to have more motivation to keep having the imagery sessions. However, this time I wanted to try imagery from an external perspective, where I visualize myself from the perspective of someone else. It makes it easier to see the technique and the form of weightlifting. Like the previous sessions, I wanted to psych myself up and be cognitive specific by imaging the certain motor skills to get a feel for the movement. In my mind, I pictured myself as an outsider who is watching someone bench press. From my perspective, I could see the person’s overall form and body movement as they lifted the barbell up
Throughout the semester, the most significant learning outcome that I acquired the most knowledge of it, was to undertake a self-regulated project to address my own linguistic need by myself. I learned to focus on one specific project, that I believed that it could have been helpful for me to practice and improve my English writing. Since the start of the semester, I was always understanding well the instructions given to us for all our tasks, such as the Personal Project Design or Annotated Bibliography.
When meeting others, the observations I make are immediate. I often assign traits and characteristics to them without being conscious of the fact that I am doing so. How I react to them – and whether or not I desire another interaction with them – is dependent on these assignments. The characteristics I admire in myself, and the attributes that I observe in others form these assessments. The Role Construct Repertory Test allowed me to recognize what traits I value in others, understand my personal constructs, and given me insight into my own cognitions.
My reason for failing to meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP), or my lack of successful completion of credit hours attempted, is due to emotional hardship. During the Spring semester of 2017, I stopped showing up to classes entirely a little bit before midterms. I stopped going because of the state of my mental health. I am currently diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder, Major Depression, and Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder.
First semester of my senior year has taught me a lot about my writing abilities and how to be consistent with fluency, while increasing the maturity level being used within my writing. I have always thought of myself as a good writer, but having the opportunity to receive criticism from others has truly opened my mind to different views.
The writing I did this semester for Engl 110c has meant alot to me because I was able to pick a topic that has such a huge impact in my life. I was able to do the topic about Navy Wives, which has a huge impact on me. I recently became a navy wife a year ago and my life has changed drastically. I was able to share everything I wanted to about the life of a military wife through my writings, as well as share to my classmates about my topic. I really enjoyed creating my ePortfolio because I could come out of my shell and be me. I made a ePortfolio website that would be for military wives to read. I believe this website would be perfect for any military wife reading it. I was able to give tips and information on what it’s like to be a military wife, how to prepare for deployments and how to stay strong being a military wife.
Week two and three were very interesting and eventful. The most impressive part was learning to use and work with the SCM. The system is a state of art and navigating through the system was educative. Any information you need on patient to help you complete your care effectively is precisely, focused and clearly documented in SCM. However, the second week I was still a little nervous and I chose to work with a client with less complex issues but curious enough to want to learn about heart sounds in a client with arterial fibrillation. I also wanted to practice taking pulses manually. My client was very cooperative, optimistic and determined to leave the hospital and go home. At the end of my shift I was so sure that he would be discharged the following day; but to my surprise; when I came back the following day, his countenance had changed, he spoke less and seemed uninterested in everything around him. During my six hours, my client had been moved at least four times from room to hallway then another room and back in the hallway before I finished my shift. This made me really sad and I felt helpless I could not help but wonder if this was the reasoning he was unhappy. I did my best to make him feel cared for and provided as much comfort as I could.
Throughout the course of this past semester I have been able to learn many valuable things about myself, such as my work ethic, my time management skills, and my need to leave an impact upon the populations I surround myself with. In regards to my work ethic, I have realized that I will stop at nothing to make sure I achieve my goals, so to do this I complete all assignments and attempt extra credit in all areas where it is allowed, further I reach out to students and professors to ensure I understand the material in class. Further, my time management skills have improved drastically throughout this past semester, as I have been able to manage my class work and assignments while maintaining high performance in conjunction to balancing extracurricular and a job. In order to delve into impacting those around me, which I have realized is my ultimate goal, I have joined many student organizations that seek to improve student life on campus and to impact those who do not have the same advantages as I do—this is why I have joined clubs such as Undergraduate Student Government and Us United.
When thinking of being an effective teacher who understands his or her students, it is very important for the teachers to understand themselves first. It is important for a teacher to understand the way that he or she learns because it gives them more knowledge and understanding of given situations. If a teacher wants the entire classroom to do well, it is important to remember what Kubiszyn & Borich (2016) state, “In other words, just as there is no one size fits all tool, no single test is appropriate for all purposes and all persons (p. 2). This quote helps readers understand that there are many factors that should be accounted for when assessing students.
“Know who you are, and be it. Know what you want, and go out and get it!”
I was not concerned about politics as a child, I was more concerned with the next level I was playing in Mario or the next Spider-Man movie. As far I was concerned, racism ended in the 1960s, the opposing side of the war were just bad guys from movies. and taxes were beyond my comprehension. So when I learned that we were going to have a new president in 2008, I was engrossed by it. Still though, I knew nothing about politics. All I knew is that my parents must know what’s good, right? My parents supported Barack Obama in 2008. They were tired of President Bush’s policies, and after the 2008 Financial Crisis, they, like many Americans, wanted change. Nine-year-old me didn’t realize what was going on, but the fact there was going to be a new president got me excited.
