The competitive nature of today's sports associations calls for athletes to be aggressive and forceful , both physically and mentally. This aggressive mentality stays with some athletes off the field, and may explain why so many athletes are committing violent crimes.

Sometimes a rivalry can become intensely heated and it may become violent. In the sport of soccer one of the most anticipated matches of the year is none other than Real Madrid vs Barcelona. These two teams are great teams and are the sport’s biggest rivals. Before the match is played the media heats up the rivalry by reporting that the one team is trash talking or undervaluing the other team. At first it is taken lightly as just a publicity stunt but when the players overhear the news, they get over competitive. When the match is being played there is always physical fights between players and it gets out of hand. Not one of these rival matches has passed that a player doesn’t get ejected from the game. In conclusion, this proves how the media plays a large role on the player’s mentality when going into the game and can also cause them to behave in certain ways.

“I am here to start a fight, because I’m a man and that’s how I solve problems” (Phillips) The main argument presented in Brian Phillips’s essay “Man Up” is what ‘being a man’ means in the football world. In football, being a man means dealing with your problems and not being afraid to fight back physically. Phillips says that football players put on this tough guy act on the field, they fight like real men, and do not run from their problems. In this essay, Phillips argues against this idea of toughness by redefining it. All aspects of football, not just the player, but the networks and the fans treat football as a man’s sport. Phillips addresses mental/emotional issues as a problem in football by describing the abusive relationship between Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. Since football is a man's sport, emotional issues are just unacceptable, but Phillips challenges this idea.

Again within Wakefield and Wann’s studies they explained about how fan violence occurs within troubled fans. Their research did not show a huge connection between alcohol and fan violence (2006, p. 179-180).

Throughout the years, sporting events has been a place for fans to forget about what is going on in their life, take a break from the real world, and focus on the game. Often, many fans don't just watch and keep up with sports solely because of the type of sport, but also to keep up with their favorite athletes and teams. It is not clear if on-field violent behavior leads to off-field violence. Phillips’ essay briefly over generalizes the attitudes of football players. In his essay, Phillips talks about the abusive actions of Incognito and describes how all football players are similar to Incognito. He categorizes all football players as being physical and tough, and not being afraid to fight.

Pascual Restrepo writes an article in the Sunday Review of the New York Times that discusses the connection between violence and history. Restrepo explores the history of Canada and its laws that were put into place when people began to settle in Canada. The Royal Canadian Mounter Police, commonly called Mounties, established forts across Canada that enforced laws and controlled violence. These forts were spread out, but did not reach all of the settlements.
