Developing Enthusiasm in Information Technology Projects
Contrary to popular belief, Information Technology (IT) professionals do not like to implement technology for the sake of technology. Technology is developed and advanced to help improve our lives. If IT professionals are just trying to better people’s lives, then why is it so difficult to get customers to accept a technology change? IT professionals leading a project must build enthusiasm for technology change to ensure approval and user acceptance. I will be proposing changes to my employer’s IT project management processes to help our project leaders develop enthusiasm for our IT projects.
Information Technology (IT) changes come in many forms but are similar. IT changes can include hardware, software, configuration, operating systems, firmware, new systems, upgraded system or even system retirements. Two thing are common in all changes, they all introduce improvement and they all require hard work. Improvements can include system availability, support, speed, security, sizing, functionality or mobility. Not all improvements are readily experienced and some come with downgrades in other areas. Unfortunately sometimes the deterioration of services are the only thing our Customer Base sees. All IT projects require hard work from the IT professional and users. They all require design, a secure back out plan, extensive testing and then support after the project goes live. It is particularly difficult to
upgrade its IT infrastructure to ensure it is capable of handling the requirements of the
Some many organizational change efforts fail to reach their intention, but the high-ranking sponsors often blame the disappointment on the employees and manager struggle to change at times. They really don’t know how difficult it is to lead and implement change effectively (Robbins, 2011). A good change does require good people skills. Employees resist change because employees can be very unsure about the loss of status or job security within the organization. This would mean the employees and there manager as well as their peers will resist technological changes. The employees will also endure fear of failure that could cause employees to doubt their ability to do the job/ or their duty. Those type of change employees are resisting because the employees are too worried about learning the new requirements. Peer pressure can be endured as well for employees when the employees start to resist change to protect their co-worker, and so will the manager to protect their work group. The human resources roles are planning and implementation, planning would be evaluation of
The implementation of “10-Point Plan for IT Modernization” began as Teri’s big initiative to upgrade the information technology infrastructure. As a result, the IS people weren’t a particularly happy lot...no one really had a great deal of respect for them.” (Brown & Vessey, 2001) This shows that business users were disconnected with their IT development counterparts and most often blamed IT for not doing enough to fix problems with the applications. They failed to realize that the problems they were seeing with their systems was due to the business users requesting a lot of adhoc changes to be made to the system without engaging proper change management
The Case for this module centers on an organization implementing a new computer-based information processing system. Thousands of organizations go through the same kind of process every day—you yourself may have been involved in one or more such "technology transformations." Despite this body of experience; the advice of thousands of consultants, researchers, and computer gurus; and the leverage of multibillion-dollar corporations such as Microsoft, Google, and Oracle; a large proportion of these
(ABSTRACT) This research project addresses the issues affecting information technology development and deployment. The issues represented in this study are addressed in the context of IT
The realities of shrinking IT budgets and increasing dependence on IT in organizations in recent years has resulted in a situation in which there is an intense competition for resources needed to execute and complete IT projects. According to Ross (2007), the shrinking IT budget in the face of increasing demand has brought new pressures to the IT function. To gain approval and funding for projects, IT departments must demonstrate that such new project will either result in cost saving, increased sales, or result in greater enterprise-wide efficiency (Ross, 2007). The intense competition for resources makes it imperative that IT managers need to

There is considerable organizational resistance to new information systems because they change many important organizational dimensions, such as culture, structure, politics, and work. The first model described by the book states that changes in technology are absorbed, deflected, and defeated by organizational task arrangements, structures, and people. In this model the only way to bring about change is to change the technology, tasks, structure, and people simultaneously. A second model, which requires the need to unfreeze organizations before introducing an innovation, quickly implementing the new system, and then refreezing or institutionalizing the change.

This paper will discuss the processes and pitfalls faced by Information Technology managers in today’s world of business. Today’s IT managers need not only be savvy about existing equipment and upcoming technology; but must also understand the budget issues they face and how to properly address them. The IT manager is asked to look into a crystal ball and predict what products will be beneficial and which requirements can be cut from the budget. They must be able to differentiate between the new shiny fad and products that will be a true asset to the company’s visions and goals. An IT budget can no longer be a static number on the company’s finance sheet; it must be a clear vision of the department’s future spending while falling in line with the goals and expectations of the company.
