How would the quality of teaching for a physical education class be judged? In a math class, you might judge the quality by how fast the students can comprehend the material being taught. In a writing class you may judge the quality by the way the students construct their sentences. But in a physical education class the best way to judge the quality of teaching is translated into the amount of fun the class is having. Certain teaching styles will work best in this environment.

In a study conducted by Sean X. Cai, he had “examined student enjoyment of physical education class conducted by the command, reciprocal and inclusion teaching styles. “(Cai, 1998) The three styles are all different. According to Cai, a command style of teaching is when, “the teacher makes all impact decisions and the learners follow these decisions.” (Cai, 1998) The reciprocal style of teaching includes, “the social relationships between peers and the conditions for immediate feedback are emphasized in such a way that the students study in pairs and provide feedback to each other.” (Cai, 1998) The final style that was used was the inclusion style. Cai defines this style being, “when students have the opportunity to decide what task difficult level to work on according to the teacher's design of the task.”(Cai, 1998) Each style was assessed by the enjoyment that resulted from it. The results of the study show that Command Style yielded the most enjoyment from the students, followed by the Reciprocal style then the Inclusion Style. Stated by Cai in his study he observed that, “It seemed that the students had more enjoyment when they totally followed the instructions without making decisions when motor skills were the learning contents.”(Cai, 1998) The other important patterns that were noticed through the Command Style were that the teacher was very authoritative and in control, the students had more time for the activity,

In school everyone learns differently; however, according to the article The Myth of Learning Styles, “The idea of learning styles is based on a theory… developed in the early 1980’s.” (pg 1.) A lot has certainly changed from the 1980’s as we learn new more material in every class we take. With this being said, someone the scientists referred to in the article “assumed” that learning styles challenged the way of the educational system when in reality, it is simply a myth. Students, like myself, only prefer to process information that they find useful or interesting to him or her. Thus giving us the problems of that teachers may take too long to cover one idea, and students may miss out out on information because he or she did not prefer that learning style.

It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. Physical education should be a fun class, but fun does not have to mean chaos. I believe in a structure that will allow the students to have fun in a safe way. My lesson plans will be structured so that students are constantly engaged in physical activity. I feel that if I can keep students moving and learning, then the chances of misbehavior will decrease. In elementary school I feel that Instant Activities should be used to get students moving when they get into my class. High school is a little different. I feel that students at the secondary school level should be introduced physical fitness activities that will help keep them in shape later on in life.
Today in sports athletes endure many mental and physical obstacles from there competitive environment. Many of today's best athletes work with sports psychologists to help them handle the pressures found in this competitive atmosphere. One question that athletes ask is, why cant they play in big games as well as they anticipate themselves doing? It is really important to me to have strong core for what I believe about teaching physical education and health. I believe that the most important things is that the students is physically active and I also believe that the students should have at least one thing or activity that they interested in that they can do for the rest of their lives in order to ensure that love to be physically active has become part of their lifestyle. Therefore, I would like to have a variety of physical activities, sports and fitness method in my curriculum and I would like my students to develop their skills and increase their knowledge of different skills and activities because it can provide a fun and enjoyable of physical activity, as well as build psychomotor and cognitive. I will try to safely provide the students the enjoyment of physical activity, become more confident with their abilities, increase their knowledge of health related fitness, and help them to find things that they love to do to continuous to be physically active. This paper will identify which of the Kolb learning styles best suits me and why I think so. It will also give some examples from my past and present to support these findings. After determining, the learning styles that best fit me and completing an inventory exercise, I have concluded that I learn best using audio and visual techniques in the learning process. I agree with everything this exercise has brought to light. I never knew that these styles were the meaning by which I learned. I have also included examples as to how I see the use and benefits of these learning styles in my career.
Traditional teaching styles use teacher-centered approach. It includes a teacher that stands at the front and tells students step by step instructions. The teacher decides what is learned, when it is learned, how it is learned, and how learning is evaluated. In a nutshell, the teacher is an information giver and evaluator. The students are just there to learn through lessons and direct instructions. Their attention is mainly focused on passing tests, assessments, and evaluations.

Furthermore, as I read the assigned articles and viewed videos, I realized that my teachers obviously, followed Piaget’s, Vygotsky. Dewey, and Bruner constructivist view because they used the theory of assimilation and accommodation, e.g., the learning of a new experience and changing of a person’s worldview. I also discovered after deep reflection on this week’s assignment, how much of an impact my teachers had on my teaching style. Before retiring, I taught based on what my students needed. Therefore, much of my teaching mixed the theories of, Constructivism, Social Constructivism and Cognitive-Behavioral depending on the student.
I am not one hundred percent positive, but I am pretty sure I want to major in Physical Education. There are many problems and dilemmas facing professionals in Physical Education. Problems range from poor facilities to kids not receiving proper treatment in the class. I think the biggest problem is the poor facilities.

The controversial topic in the realm of physical education is if physical education should remain in schools. Higher up’s are complaining about test scores and suggesting that cutting physical education programs would lead to better test scores. Technically, this would lead to more time spent sitting in a desk and listening to lectures in class, which is supposed to improve test scores. So, the solution to increase test scores is to take the small chance of physical activity that children receive during the school day and keep them almost completely sedentary for six-plus hours.
