By carefully completing this assignment over the summer, which you need to bring to class on the first day of school, you will be prepared to discuss the story in the fall and to write an in-class essay using your novel as the basis for your response.
You are required to discuss a work by a 20th or 21st century artist, photographer, designer, architect, film-maker, philosopher or writer and show how this work reflects, contradicts or extends theories of and attitudes to visual culture current at the time of its making.
In the passage “Why Literature Matters” by Dana Gioia, Gioia states that the decline of interest in reading in America is decreasing. She then claims that this lack of interest will hold negative effects on the future of our society. Gioia uses facts and evidence to support her claim.
This learning activity has the students looking more deeply into their chosen book using a more critical mind rather than just enjoying the book for its basic story line. It has them taking note of what is happening at each stage of the book and why these events are taking place, then taking this information they have gathered and developing a written report to convey their thoughts and ideas in the book along with developing the skills necessary to produce a piece of writing that is easy to read and understand for the reader. This activity also has a lot of hidden features to the task, such as using the correct grammar, development of sentence structure and use of creative thinking to make the piece interesting to the reader.
When taking English Composition 2 I have learned various things that I can carry through with me throughout the rest of my academic and social life. The class English Composition 2 touched on the components of character, setting, short story, drama, and poetry. With each section and a lecture on each section I have taken away a piece away from each section, one thing that is for sure I will never read literature the same after this class. When talking about character we looked into the story Gorilla My Love and how the story is told through the eyes of a young black girl named Hazel. Concluding from this section of the class I learned that if the characters were to be different characters the story would change as whole. When looking deeper into the concept of setting as a class we had the opportunity to learn how to depict where the setting is, and learn how the setting can make a difference in any type of literature. For the concept of short stories as a student I looked deeper into the story of 20/20. After, a struggle on the topic of short stories I learned the different compontes that go into and are used in making a short story. For an example, the story 20/20 uses the model Freytag’s Pyramid to tell the story line. The component of Drama happened to be my favorite component of the class. I
My topic is spies during World War II. During World War II, countries used spies to gather information about each other. It is a specific and broad topic. Since the fifth grade, I have enjoyed World War II history. It’s very fascinating to me. It is a very tragic and fascinating time period. Recently in May, I visited the Holocaust Museum with my school in Washington, D.C. and fell in love with this time period even more. I felt more connected with it. This war was so raw and has great stories behind it. I also feel somewhat connected to it because it was not even that long ago that this happened, we at least all have relatives that are alive that can remember hearing about it, that is what makes it so real to me. Just knowing about World War II occurred was not enough for me; I wanted to know who was behind it all.

In the article “Why Literature Matters,” Dana Gioia discusses about how interest displayed in the arts has declined, especially in literature. Gioia uses a variety of different literary tools to create a compelling argument including appealing to the reader’s emotion, using facts and statistics, and creating a “call to action”. Throughout the whole essay, Gioia skillfully plays with the reader’s emotions to convince them. Gioia brings out aspects such as the consequences of the situation.
In the article “Why Literature Matters” by Dana Gioia, she is trying to persuade the audience that the decline of reading in America has a negative impact. She does this by using logos and diction in her writing to make her claim stronger. Dana Gioia uses logos, which is putting facts into the article. This is proven in the second paragraph when she states “According to the 2002 survey of Public Participation in the Arts… arts participation by Americans has declined for eight of the nine major forms”. Gioia uses facts from a relible resource, which makes her claim stronger.
In the article, “Why Literature Matters,” Dana Gioia is trying to get the reader to understand that reading actually benefits American citizens, and inversely not reading has negative consequences. Gioia built his argument by using a multitude of literary devices that include diction, organization,using direct quotes, and using credible sources/ facts. By utilizing many different types of literary techniques, Dana made his argument more persuasive. At the beginning of his argument, Gioia starts of his argument by using facts from credible sources that explain how young Americans reading has “diminished” and then transitioning into the impact of how not reading has negative consequences.
