Today, we live in a society where everything that surrounds us is designed in a way as to improve the quality of our living. In saying that, have we, as designers, contributed to the process of improving our lives through design? This essay will discuss and analyze whether visual communication is part or the problem or part of the solution in the society. Also, this essay will answer whether graphic design has the responsibility to address serious global issues and how it should do this. This essay will also tackle the topic of "Do we need Visual Communication Designers?" and how this topic relates and answer our question to whether it is a problem, a solution or will it be able to help with the global issues.
Designers have the responsibility in the society as they can affect the way society functions. Design benefits the society. A lot of designs are aiming for the concept of design for good. Numerous challenges and the growing industry of visual communication are just a couple of things that designers face in the establishment of communication piece and artwork. Social responsibility has been one of the challenges designers are facing at the moment. Lucienne Roberts mentioned, "graphic design is in an ethical flux". There are a lot of publications as well as manifestos that target at raising awareness of ‘design for good '. On the other hand, coupling ethics and graphic design also seem slightly absurd, as mentioned by Roberts. (Desain Grafis Indonesia, 2010, para. 3)
Graphic design is an art that entails visual communication, which tends to combine words, images or even an idea in an effort to bring out some information to an audience. Graphic designers effectively put their art and profession mainly in the design of graphics, logos, and posters among other forms of visual communication. In addition, these designers assist in creation of continuity among the different instruments of communication. Principles of graphic design and elements of graphic design are what graphic designers commonly utilize (Lupton et al, 2008).
If we examine our existence through a dichotomous lens of internal and external experiences, it is easier to understand the importance of graphic design. Everyone, to some extent, is trapped within themselves. There is me in here, and you in there—a separation exists. We find common ground in the external world where there are certain rules that most of us have agreed to play by. Graphic design functions as a catalyst for either strengthening or disintegrating these rules. It screams, “Continue! Begin! Stop!” The graphic designer must work through the external world, understand its rules, and journey through their internal world in search of a project’s solution. If the solution is successful,
Graphic design is a vast industry in visual communication, using information, typography, isotopes, and diagrams as a way to communicate across to its audiences. Through detailed investigations of design and taking on Robin Kinross (1985), claims that the distinction between design for information and design for persuasion “cannot be a clear one” this work will explore the possibilities of visual rhetoric in graphic design.
In its simplest form, graphic design is the harmony between art and text. Problem solving and emphasis on thought are some examples of what it can do. Through my education at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte I have learned all the ways I can create art and challenge my viewers. Once I become a young professional I envision that my contribution to the design field will be a unique one based on a collaboration of my education and experiences. Several graphic designers including David Carson and Paula Scher have inspired me along the way and influenced different ideals within my work.
It is very easy to take the visualization of information too far however. For example, modern dashboard designed programs and applications which present information in a variety of ways appears very gimmicky, and according to Stephen Few, they can actually limit the amount of information presented to the user that pertains to a problem they are trying to get information on (12). Therefore there exist an important balance in the presentation of information in design. It should allow the user capture important information from the product, but the way the information is visualized should not be so flashy or over saturated to where it stuns the user and inhibits their comprehension of the data presented. Some of the more subtle forms of visualization that need consideration, according to William Lidwell, et al, is how colors and angles can affect the pleasure of viewing a design through innate associations people have with them, such as red signaling danger. (61-63) Secondly, the usability of a design needs careful consideration. After all, if the user cannot actually get any information out of the design, it will be of no use. This is why
All the graphic designers reported a knack in knowing how to appeal to people through images. They had the capacity to create images that people found alluring. Whether or not the targeted audience concurred with this assertion is beyond the scope of this paper. Suffice to say, there seemed to be a consensus among graphic artists and their superiors stating that these designers are talented in that they know how to appeal to public sentiment. The source of this ability being a bit ambiguous, the artists were content with stating it as a matter of fact. None of the artists attributed this ability to some specific facet of their lives. That is, although some of the artists in question had undergone training in graphic designing and the like, they did not seem to think that it was any specific instruction that gave them the ability to petition people’s attention through their work. Rather, they seemed to think that this ability was a central feature of their personality, an intrinsic aspect of their
Graphic design is an art and practice that involves planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. It is also called communication design. Graphic designing as a profession has given birth to many amazing designers. These artists have gone on to change the world of graphic design for the better. Here is a collection of the most prolific graphic designers.
Graphic design is very essential in our everyday life. It is something that pulls in the advertisement and attracts our eyes for visual. It presents in everywhere that can be found in newspaper, magazines, books, internet sites, posters, products, arts. Heller and Vienne (p.15) reported that “most graphic design works, are not only using specialized graphics and multimedia software, to communicate ideas that inspire, messages, or beguile consumers.” In fact, graphic design is a complicate work. To be a successful graphic designer can be difficult for emerging practitioners, as interpersonal skill, soft skills and competition. This essay will analysis three different areas in graphic design of the rate of occupational and sectoral, career patterns and the challenge and problems to order to be successful.
The Internet describes the role of a graphic designer as a designer in the process of visual communication and problem-solving with typography, space, image and color[1]. Through the use of both paper work (Drawing) to computer work with apps such as Photoshop, design etc.
Morals and ethics question us in everyday life. We are constantly facing new dilemmas that put us in difficult situations; and thinking of them in depth will make us question our loyalty towards a particular matter. Graphic Designers face those obligations relatively more than other people. The nature of their job is to create pieces of work, and these may be those that as an individual, they do not solely agree with but have an obligation to complete it in order to keep the client satisfied or keep their job and inevitably, get paid. Similarly, using a piece of work which does not belong to the ‘creator’ but passing it off as their own and calling the originality of said work in to question can also call the ethics and morals of the user into question. Fair use and copyright infringement is an explosive and rising issue within the scope of Graphic Design, especially with the rapid evolution of the Internet. It has caused a lot of repercussions in the world of design, some which have benefitted and others not so much. The growth of this subject has helped in distinguishing the difference between what the main distinguishers are in fair use as opposed to copyright infringement. In an era where the Internet is the library and people have access to any type of image, artwork, logo, fonts or text they desire, it is often questioned how it can clearly be determined if in fact, a piece of work is being used fairly or is being infringed under the Copyright, Designs
oday, graphic design has taken over the entire world. “In recent years, design has become an international phenomenon affecting an increasing number of countries from the developing world and designers play a major role in the process of cultural and sustainable development” (Sasaki, Sali). Some may think it’s just a simple color or a logo, but it’s not just that. It’s a way of persuasion. Graphic designers alter the way an individual goes about their daily life. Most don’t realize the effects that design has within their changing lifestyle. One may not know that, “many graphic designers are hard-wired to control their environment” (Heller, Steven). Graphic design all starts with color and color always starts with psychology. A simple
“Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions, there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated”. The following items will be discussed to give better understanding of Graphic Design vs Art: definition of the two terms, what is considered art, what is considered design, and opinions of the two subjects.
Meredith Davis’s book “Graphic Design Theory” was published in September 2012 by Thames & Hudson. This book blends a study of historical thinking of design with contemporary / modern approach to it. It also suggests students to critically analyse their work and asks them to adopt the design theories to embellish their practical design work as it will help them construct better work. This book also helps in understanding the consumers and the history of Graphic Design and also talks about a range of theories and introduces a collection of concepts and sources for future use and reference. In this book, Meredith Davis talks about the relationship of visual representation to the contexts of design. It talks about focusing on the broad and long term aftereffects of design and not to design only for the moment and responding to prompt needs.
The adjustments take into consideration the inherent qualities of the medium, the audience to which it is "played," and the ever-changing nature and flow of the communication. Rather than proposing a normative design solution or a positive theory of design, this volume introduces an analytical tool as an "ice breaker" to provoke discussion among designers that may lead to "good" design processes and certainly, improvisational design extends our thinking about expressive digital communication.
Design should be obliged to promote happiness in society because depending on your mood, customers would be able to appreciate and admire artifacts which are more colorful due to the variety of colors used as well as it being very appealing to look at because of the fact that vibrant colors were also used in their remarkable art pieces.
